Learning to Cook - Cyber-style

You can often learn what you need to know by using technology that's been around for years - such as magazines, books and TV. But sometimes, it would be a bit easier to use newer technology, such as the Internet, to get the job done more efficiently. Such is the case in learning how to cook.

Books are great for learning about many things, especially cooking. Cookbooks have info about ingredients, technique, what sort of products to buy for your kitchen and more. But what they lack is a bit worse - pictures. No illustrations often makes it hard to picture what you need to do.

For pictures, we can always turn to TV. TV shows about cooking often show just how to pull together a recipe, and how to use certain types of kitchen equipment as well. But you can't print a recipe on TV, and TV can't give you the detailed amounts needed to really complete a recipe like a book can.

The Internet, and the numerous food and cooking related websites on it, has the best combination of the two of these. These websites can have video files, showing the techniques and skills, with lengths as short as 10 seconds or as long as an hour or more. They can be just as high quality as television, too.

Websites can also display tons of text - in fact, the basis of most websites is still text. This means that the same detailed instructions and recipes found in a cookbook can be displayed right alongside the videos of cooking. This makes the whole process more convenient than showing the two separately.

Being searchable is another great benefit that comes with the Internet. Books are searchable as well - but you need to flip through the pages and through many cookbooks to get what you want. With search engines, you can find recipes quickly with inputting just a little bit of text and clicking a button.

There are even whole websites devoted to novice cooks - with scaled down recipes and videos that go step by step, showing the recipe and each step in video form for cooks who really need help learning how to cook. These are resources that aren't found anywhere else but online.

With all of the choices that are available for learning how to cook, from classes to books to television shows, you need to be sure that you pick a method that will really help you learn how to cook easily and well. Often, a combination of classes and online resources can help you to easily learn to cook.
