The Danger Of Food Poisoning Is Real |
|
With all the crazy things going on in our world today, we really shouldn’t have to worry about food poisoning when it comes to the meals that we prepare in our own kitchens, especially when some of us take such great care with our food safety and kitchen sanitation guidelines, literally going out of our way to purchase only the freshest dated products, proper storage of those products, proper personal hygiene, kitchen sanitation, vigorous washing and rinsing of all raw vegetables, following proper cooking temperature techniques , the list can go on and on, in your mind and heart, the food you are preparing and cooking safety measures you’ve taken should be more than enough. But even with all that, sometimes, somehow, we still contract food borne illnesses; food danger seems to have a way of finding us. The reason for this is because some food is already tainted before it reaches the local supermarket. The pathogens that cause food borne illnesses, likeToxins, Parasites and Bacterium cannot be seen by the naked eye, unlike the mold you have seen on an old slice of bread or cheese. There is no possible way to tell until people bring the products home to consume and start feeling sick. The six main food borne illnesses from the above mentioned pathogens are Salmonella, E Coli, Campylobacter, Botulism, Listeria and the silly sounding, but very dangerous and wide spread Mad Cow Disease. These all usually start out with sharp stomach aches, pains and cramps followed by headaches, fever, dizziness, vomiting and diarrhea. By the time people start going to the hospitals, and the hospitals start gathering their information, and end up sending the first 30 people home with the flu, by the time they figure out something is terribly wrong and start asking everyone what they had eaten today, it is already too late for hundreds, to thousands, to tens of thousands of people. This is a total shame, especially in the United States where the system that is in place for food safety is supposed to be the absolute best, and it is happening on a much more than regular basis. In the past 6 months there have been more memorable food poisoning scares than I personally care to remember, on the news, in the papers and on the web. The spinach scare started it all out, followed by the peanut butter and mixed salad greens, those 3 were all salmonella, the chili sauces and now the 21 million pounds of hamburger patties, both of which more recently caused many cases of botulism, and it is very unfortunate that it doesn’t seem to be slowing down at all, as a matter of fact as I am writing this right at this moment my wife has just informed me of another hamburger patty recall containing botulism and also there is a problem with chicken pot pies containing salmonella. On the news, 5 minutes ago. The simple fact of the matter is that the population has grown dramatically in the past 4 decades, which means that the demand for food is greater than ever, in turn, the supply is also. The agencies in which we trust with watching over our food supply are completely overwhelmed and simply cannot keep up. This is where we have to come in and do our best to protect our families on our own, by proper cleaning, preparation and cooking techniques, we can cut the possibilities of contracting a food borne illness by quite a substantial percentage. What it comes down to is we all just have to become twice as vigilant in the ways we combat food poisoning. Now I truly cannot speak for anyone else, or pretend to know what anyone else’s core beliefs or values are, but if all it takes is an extra 15 to 20 minutes of your time for each meal, to help protect your family from the dangers that lurk in your kitchen and the dangers that lurk in your food, most of us will take the time and effort to protect our families from food poisoning and food borne illnesses. In all reality, in some instances it could be the difference between life and death. Final Thought – I believe that it is time for us all to stop playing around with the dangers of food poisoning, and require ourselves and our loved ones, like restaurant employees are required to, learn and administer proper food, cooking, kitchen safety and sanitation techniques so we can all be secure in the fact that our families are safe from these sometimes deadly food borne illnesses, at least in our own kitchen once and for all.
