HCAC F.A.Q.

I’m an actor, why should I sign up for workshops at HCAC?
Actors are like athletes and human behaviour scientists. Both the physical and mental muscles require
constant conditioning and research to keep your instrument (aka your mind, your body, your senses,
your impulses and your voice) sharp and ready to go at a moment’s notice. The immersive training using
the full breadth and depth of proven techniques and systems allows actors to be more 'alive' on camera
or onstage. With training, actors make more specific choices that are grounded in truth while ensuring
greater sensitivity and self-awareness of their instrument without being self-conscious. Training
lessens the gap between the actor and the character for more honest, specific and lifelike performances
so your characters have more personality and are more real. Your acting becomes less indicated, clichéd
and unrealistic. With training, you find internal solutions (i.e. relate to your imagination and personal life
experiences) or external solutions (i.e. you hone the visible similarities in what is apparently different
between you and the character). Actors will learn how to prepare for auditions and roles better. Acting
lessons, training and one-on-one coaching can also assist with having more impactful auditions. They
can be the difference between a call back and no call at all.

I’m not an actor, why should I sign up for workshops at HCAC?
In fast moving Asian societies where pressures on career and cost of living are high. There are many
suppressed emotions within many ‘normal’ professions with little artistic expression or outlets which
allow for an emotional release. This possibly generates tension and stress which can affect many
areas in your life. Acting is a credible and constructive outlet to fulfil your artistic expression. In a
judgment-free environment, you can plumb the depths of your own consciousness and explore
various dimensions of your own personality which you may not have confronted. Acting is not just
standing in front of a mirror and speaking certain lines, but interacting with people around you, be it
onstage, on camera, in front of loved ones, colleagues or clients. Acting allows a different dimension
to emerge which is more than the sum of the parts. For the everyday individual, and those who have
no intention of being an actor, the training will explore and express various facets of your personality
that may be suppressed in your daily life. You will hone and develop your skills and talents that are
amplified and clearly differentiated. Develop the confidence and presence to be a compelling and
effective communicator in your workplace and even at home.

There are Core Workshops and Elective workshops. What is the difference?
A Core Workshop deals with fundamentals, technique and specific form of application towards
monologues and scenes. Each session spends about half the time working on the body and the
senses and the other half on actual acting work. An Elective Workshop deals with specific areas
of focus in terms of the craft itself. For example, in a Core Workshop like Introduction to Method Acting
Module 1 workshop you learn about your being aware of your body, your senses, warming up and
tuning the body to be ready to work and focus on monologues. In a Scene Study/Actor’s Gym workshop,
the entire session is devoted to working on scenes, monologues and whatever else you want to bring
in to work on. No time is spent on warming up the body or tuning it. In short, the Elective Workshops add
depth to the substance you pick up in the Core Workshops.

There are so many workshops to sign up for, what do you recommend?
If you have never had any acting experience or training before or perhaps you have no actual system
or methodical approach to your work, we recommend you go through at least one Core Workshop
(e.g. Introduction to Method Acting 1 & 2) and at least one Elective Workshop within a semester so you
can put into practice what you are learning. If you have had some experience or simply just want to
focus on specific areas, then you may sign up for just the Elective Workshop. Depending on your schedule,
we generally recommend a minimum of 2 workshops a semester. All students who have finished Introduction
to Method Acting 1 & 2 can attend any future session of these two workshops for free provided they remain
in good standing according to the HCAC Administration.

How many workshops can I sign up for?
You may sign up for as many as your schedule allows for.
Certain Core and Elective Workshops may have some pre-requisites before admission.

How much is it per workshop?
All our workshops are $600 (unless otherwise stated).

Are there any rebates?
Yes, we offer an attractive rebate of $50 off for every subsequent workshop registration.
Within a semester your first workshop sign up is $600, your second workshop would be $550, your third $500
and so on.

Do you offer payment plans?
If you need a payment plan for a specific workshop(s) sign up, we would ask for $200 upon registration,
and three separate payments of the remainder owed. Payment dates are arranged upon confirmation.

Do you offer scholarships and financial aid?
Not yet. We are developing a system at present.
