The History

Established in 1933, Ming Chung Restaurant is one of Singapore’s oldest Henghua restaurants. The restaurant was started by the late Ho Ah Tong, a migrant from Putien in Fujian province, China. At that time, Ming Chung Restaurant was on Weld Road, opposite the present “Thieves Market” in the Sungei Road area. Catering to the Henghua immigrants’ cravings for home-style Henghua food, the restaurant became a meeting place of sorts for the local Henghua and Hokkien communities. The restaurant was named “Ming Chung”, meaning “People” in Chinese, to reflect the affordable home-style Henghua food for the diverse clientele including rickshaw riders and labourers.





Ah Tong’s son, Ho Boon Lim, eventually took over the business and together with his wife and sons, they continue to run the restaurant, serving the same perennial Henghua favourites. The original premise was demolished in 1988 when the land was cleared for redevelopment. The restaurant has since moved to its present location at 67 Maude Road.

is one of Singapore’s oldest Henghua restaurants. they are known for Henghua, other signature dishes include Fried Henghua (Fine) Bee Hoon, Fried Mee Sua (with black seaweed and peanut toppings), Stir Fried Clams with Chilli and many more.
Ming Chung restaurant is one of the very few Henghua restaurants in Singapore. The very last time I've tasted the henghua styled meesua was in one of the provinces in China during my holiday trip. Oh boy, I cannot emphasize how much I love it and went for a second portion. If you wish to try it, Ming Chung is one of such places that you can go to for the authentic fujian cuisine.

The Place If you have always enjoyed the food served at Pu TienRestaurant, then Ming Chung Restaurant is a gem find. Located along one of the shophouses in Jalan Besar, Ming Chung Restaurant is a nondescript coffee-shop style eatery which serves authentic Henghua cuisine at a much more affordable price as compared to the exorbitant prices seen at Pu Tien restaurant.
A clan cuisine, like Pu Tien. But a simpler decor, reminiscent of Singapore in the olden days. Great lor mee and fried fish!
The Henghua Lor Mee is a must have u must order, you can smell the rich fragrance of the starchy soup base
super yummy henghua dishes. a must try place! remember to order their signature dishes like stir fried clams with chilli.. yums..
