Masters Degree a Solid Investment

By: Shay Rosen

Getting an education is always a wise choice, especially if you want to compete in today's educationally obsessed job market. Where a bachelor degree once held a graduate in high esteem, it has quickly become the minimum entry level requirement for positions with most employers. As of late, a postgraduate education is the new guarantee for some level of separation between an individual and their competition in the job market. Add a little job experience to the mix and a person's chances for garnering the best employment opportunities they are eligible for in their field increase even more.

The difficulty lies in making the decision to go for master's degree, as the expense and time commitment of doing so can be extremely difficult for those already in the workforce as well as those who have recently graduated with a bachelor's degree and are faced with a mountain of student loan debt. No one ever said advancement was easy, but unless a person is prepared for the financial and scheduling ramifications of earning a postgraduate education, it may be better to postpone it or find an alternative to campus based institutions.

Distance learning offers that alternative, which is why its popularity has risen substantially in the last several years. Most people will spend a few hours a day in front of the computer regardless of what they do for a living, and choosing to spend that time productively is much easier than committing to weekly commutes to the local college.

In terms of expense, online learning is often cheaper than campus based learning as there are no athletic fees, parking fees, 'building renovation fees' or other non-educationally related charges added to the cost of tuition. While almost all online institutions do have a brick and mortar campus, they usually exclude any charges that shouldn't apply to distance learning students. Even some state universities that offer a limited number of degree programs provide lower tuition rates for students attending online.

For those pursuing an MBA, executive MBA programs are an excellent way to further their education while still earning a living. Most employers who have an executive MBA program pay a substantial part of the tuition or have reduced tuition arrangements with the college or university the program is associated with.
