- Kamasan
This village is the centre of traditional ‘wayang’ painting. It lies in the south part of Klungkung, past the town of Gelgel. This place is also known for its gold and silver smiths who specialize in hand beaten bowls and trays used for religious ceremonies all over the island.
- Goa Lawah
In the east side of Klungkung 6km away is the cave Goa Lawah. Meaning ‘Bat Cave’, this spot is said to extend all the way underground to a small temple Pura Goa. This temple is in the Besakih Complex, on the slopes on Mount Agung.
In this cave, thousands of bats cluster together and high-pitched shrieks fill the air. This strange but natural phenomena of a cave and temple are considered holy by the Balinese and devotees come from afar to make their offerings here.
- Nusa Penida, Lembongan & Ceningan
Most of the land in the Klungkung regency is on the islands of Nusa Penida, Nusa Lembongan and Nusa Ceningan. The first of the three mentioned, Nusa Penida, was once a penal colony and so it was stripped of its original teak forests and jungle glory and is now still this barren and hilly terrain. It is also the largest of the three islands. However, there have been recent government agricultural projects providing ‘lontoro’, ‘cashew’ and ‘gamal’ trees to plant. This is entitled the “greening” programme.
The Nusa people are fantastic cow breeders and each family on the island possesses two cows or more. Once these sleek, well-fed animals are ready, they are packed onto large outrigger canoes and shipped over to Sanur for local beef consumption and export.
These islands of Nusa Penida and Nusa Lembongan were discovered by a group of traveling surfers almost a decade ago and the Jungut Batu beach is now famous in surfing circles all around the world. The spot is also conducive for skin diving.
