More than 32 years later, the Jaya Pub remains the preferred destination of older expatriates and Indonesians. The pub retains its retro feel; no major décor changes have been made since the seventies. Paneled walls made from wood are covered with posters of glamorous Hollywood stars from past eras. At the Jaya Pub, expats greet each other with a warm embrace and catch up on one another as old friends do, as this is their home away from home.
While some patrons might find this vintage look somewhat dated and kitschy, it gives the pub its charm; loyal patrons come and enjoy the atmosphere. Guests can sit back and enjoy classics from the sixties and the seventies; think Carlos Santana, Elvis Presley, The Beatles, and Eric Clapton, among others. And with the bar set up near the stage, it's like having front-row seats to a concert nightly. A band also plays current chart toppers for the younger set.
The place serves a full range of steaks, European sausages such as bratwurst and weissewurst, and Indonesian favorites such as sop buntut and nasi goreng. Some of the staff have been working at the Jaya Pub for more than 20 years and have observed the changing times. Chat with them the next time you pay a visit. Who knows? You might learn things not mentioned in history books.
