Malaysian Public Holidays
by: Sophia

Being a country that has many different races, religions and cultures, Malaysia also celebrates many different holidays and festivals. There are two different kinds of holidays in Malaysia, National holidays and State holidays. For National holidays, all offices are closed for the day except for retail outlets so shopping malls and other shopping and food outlets will still be open for business. State holidays only apply to the different States in Malaysia. An example of a State holiday would be the Birthday of the Head of States, Federal Territory Day and Thaipusam.

Here’s a listing of Public Holidays in Malaysia for the year 2007

Jan 1 : New Year’s Day

Jan 20 : Awal Muharram

Feb 18-19 : Chinese New Year

Mar 31 : Prophet Muhammad’s Birthday

May 1 : Labour Day

May 1 : Wesak Day

Jun 2 : Birthday of SPB Yang di-Pertuan Agong (King’s Birthday)

Aug 31 : National Day

Oct 13-14 : Hari Raya Puasa

Nov 8 : Deepavali

Dec 20 : Hari Raya Haji

Dec 25 : Christmas Day

Many events will be held during some of these holidays so do plan your trip to coincide with the holidays. The more prominent holidays would be Chinese New Year, National Day, Hari Raya and Christmas. Many celebrations are held all over the country during these holidays. If you want to experience Malaysia Truly Asia, come be a part of the festivities.
