The first counselling session:
Often the first session is used for evaluation where you may assess if you feel comfortable and I evaluate if I am able to offer you what you are seeking. Research suggests a good fit between the counsellor/therapist and client is of utmost importance in success of therapy.
An average session is for 60 minutes but if you wish it can be prefixed for longer
Subsequent counselling sessions:
Based on our initial meeting where we explore the presented problem, we reach an agreement about how to proceed from there. Generally meeting once a week is the norm but it can be adapted to different needs. For some clients 2-6 sessions can be sufficient to make the necessary changes. Others may wish to continue to explore their experiences for longer.
Intervention/therapeutic techniques:
There are many.
Some techniques are based on the premise that the past experiences cause current psychological problems and understanding why we do what we do can bring about 'aha' moments while others are based on the assumption that underneath negative emotions lie negative thoughts that people have the ability to change without having to understand why.
My decision to choose any specific technique is based on the clients' needs.
Question: How many psychologists does it take to change a light bulb?
Answer: Only one, but the bulb must really want to be changed.
Motivation and willingness to change is seen to be more important than the techniques.
