Dr Chew Yoon Chong Winston
MBBS (S'pore), MMed (Surgery), FRCS (Edin), FRCS(Glasg), FAMS (Ortho) Clinical Interests Hand and Microsurgery Dr Chew graduated from NUS with his basic medical degree (MBBS) in 1989. After he obtained his higher surgical qualifications [(MMed (Surg), FRCS(Ed), FRCS(Glas)], he entered orthopaedic surgical training and successfully exited to become a specialist in Orthopaedic Surgery [FAMS (Orth)]. He has a special interest in Hand and Microsurgery, and was awarded the Ministry of Health's Health Manpower Development Plan (HMDP) scholarship to undergo advanced training in Hand and Microsurgery in the prestigious Christine M Kleinert Institute for Hand and Microsugery / Kleinert-Kutz Hand Care Center in Louisville, Kentucky, USA. Upon his return, he went on to exit in Hand Surgery in 2002, to become the only surgeon to date to exit in both Orthopaedic and Hand Surgery. He has been working in Tan Tock Seng Hospital since 1996. His clinical interests include managing fractures of the distal radius and hand, wrist conditions, arthroscopy of the wrist and small joints of the hand, reconstruction for deformities of rheumatoid and degenerative arthritis including total joint replacement for the wrist and fingers, and microsurgical reconstruction of both upper and lower limbs including replantations, vascularised free flap and toe-to-hand transfers. His passion is in good patient care. Dr Chew also has a passion for teaching, and is the Adjunct Assistant Professor of the Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine of NUS, and for his efforts, he was awarded the "Top 10 Teachers" award by Tan Tock Seng Hospital in 2007-2008 and 2008-2009, and was also conferred the "Outstanding Teacher Award" in Orthopaedics undergraduate teaching by NUS in 2009-2010. He is also actively involved in the training of orthopaedic and hand surgeons and served in the Specialist Training Committees (STC) for both Orthopaedic Surgery and Hand Surgery. He is currently in the Residency Advisory Committee (RAC) of the Residency Training Programmes for both Orthopaedic Surgery and Hand Surgery. Dr Chew was the Head of Department of Orthopaedic Surgery in Tan Tock Seng Hospital from 2007 to 2011. He also helped to set up the Hand and Micro Surgery Section of the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery, with the help of 3 other specialists in Hand Surgery. He also served as the Head of the Section from 2008 to 2012. He continues to serve as a senior consultant in the department on a part-time basis, serving patients with hand problems, and teaching and training students and junior staff. Dr Chew also served as President of the Singapore Society for Hand Surgery from 2004-2006. He is interested in clinical research and has authored 26 articles in peer reviewed journals, and 5 book chapters in hand surgery.
Dr Peng Yeong Pin
MBBS, FRCS(Edinburgh) FAMS(Hand Surgery) Dr YP Peng graduated from the National University of Singapore medical school in 1993, became a fellow of the Royal College of Edinburgh in 1999 and obtained his specialist accreditation as a Hand Surgeon from the ministry of health in 2002. He went on to complete a Microsurgical fellowship at the Chang Gung Memorial Hospital in Taiwan and subsequently a Hand Surgery fellowship in Kleinert and Kutz Associates in the US with the Higher Manpower development Award in 2003 and 2004. Upon his return, he set up the microsurgical training laboratory in the National University hospital and was clinical director and consultant in the Department of Hand & Reconstructive Microsurgery from 2006-2008. He went on to head the department from 2009-2012. During his tenure, the department set up the Hand and Reconstructive Microsurgery Centre in NUH with a staff of 11 hand surgeons. Dr Peng's clinical interest is in surgery for trauma in the hand and wrist, replantation and reconstructive microsurgery. He also provided microsurgical support to the liver transplant teams. He has published on new surgical flap techniques in the lower limb and was on the teaching faculty for flaps of the hand at the recent American Society for Surgery of the Hand meeting. His other clinical interest covers care for degenerative conditions of the hands. He believes that clinical outcomes will determine cost effective treatment in hand surgery, he continues to purse clinical database studies in clinical research. Dr Peng was a clinician educator during his tenure in institution and was involved in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching. He is regularly involved as invited speaker for local and international meetings. He sits on the specialist training committee in hand surgery as well as the residency accreditation committee at Ministry of Health. He was the president of the Singapore Society for Surgery of the Hand from 2009-2011. He enjoys running, tennis, the game of golf as well as music and traveling.
Dr Tan Ter Chyan
MB, BCh, BAO(NUI) MMed(Ortho, NUS) MRCS(Edinburgh) FAMS(Hand) Consultant Hand Surgeon Dr Tan Ter Chyan graduated from the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland, Dublin in 1995, and became Member of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh in 2001. He was awarded the Master of Medicine, Orthopaedics by the National University of Singapore in 2002. He obtained his specialist accreditation by the Ministry of Health (Singapore) as a Hand Surgeon in 2005. He was awarded the Higher Manpower Development Program for 2006 and was clinical fellow at the Royal North Shore Hospital in Sydney in 2007 with the Department of Hand Surgery and Peripheral Nerve Surgery, University of Sydney. Dr Tan worked as a surgeon in the Department of Hand and Reconstructive Microsurgery, National University Hospital from 2002 to 2012. Dr Tan was a specialist hand surgeon in the Department of Hand and Reconstructive Microsurgery (HRM) from 2005 to 2007 and consultant from 2007 to 2012. He was the Postgraduate Director and was involved in training the advanced Hand Surgery trainees in the national program. He was also the first Associate Program Director for the national residency program in Hand Surgery. He has a clinical interest in peripheral nerve surgery, especially brachial plexus surgery, stroke, cerebral palsy and surgical rehabilitation of the upper limb in tetraplegia. His other clinical interest is in minimally invasive surgery of the hand and upper limb especially wrist arthroscopy and endoscopic peripheral nerve surgery. His research interest is in the field of nerve regeneration and bioelectrics and is actively involved with the SINAPSE scientists (Singapore institute of Neurotechnology). Dr Tan has been an invited speaker for local, regional and international meetings and continues to publish both his clinical and basic science research. Dr Tan is currently the Secretary of the Singapore Society for Hand Surgery ( www.sshs.org.sg) Dr Tan is involved in medical missions and also previously the Deputy Commanding Officer of the 1st Medical Squadron, the Search and Rescue (SAR) squadron of Republic of Singapore Air Force from 2006 to 2010. He enjoys the outdoors and cycling.
