In my management and effective leadership skills seminars, I often ask participants, based on their years of experience, to list their top do's and don'ts for effectively managing people. After conducting workshops and keynotes all over the world for over 12 years, I've come up with ten timeless principles, or tips for managing people. Here are the top ten:
1. Set goals collaboratively with your employees. You're more likely to have employees who are accepting of the solution because they were involved in the process.
2. Follow through. Always do what you say you're going to do. Otherwise, your credibility is destroyed. As the saying goes, they remember your last act.
3. In managing people, be empathetic and compassionate when the situation calls for it. For example, when a good employee is experiencing personal problems. Remember, your employees are your most important asset. And, you are managing people.
4. Be honest, trustworthy, fair and respectful. In managing people, if you employees don't perceive you as trustworthy, you're less likely to have real influence over them.
5. Lead by example. Be a good role model. If you are honest, trustworthy, respectful, and hardworking, you're training them to be the same.

6. Communicate clearly with your staff on a regular basis. The importance of good communication sounds so obvious, it's as if it shouldn't need to be mentioned! But over and over, I hear about managers who don't communicate effectively.
7. Take care of important issues. Don't procrastinate working on projects you don't want to do. And promptly address performance issues with a difficult employee. Otherwise, these problems only get worse.
8. Have goals and objectives clearly defined in writing for accountability. Include dates, deadlines, and numbers so it's very clear what's expected. For example, if someone is in customer service they are to, "Respond to all customer inquiries and complaints within 12 hours of receiving them.This way, the employee clearly understands what's expected of them and is less likely to say, "Well,that's just your perception. You're just picking on me."
9. In managing people, be available. Be approachable.
10. Empower and motivate your team not just in terms of finishing projects, but also in terms of successfully managing conflict.
Effective leadership and managing people is all about communication and being able to successfully manage conflict. Learn to get along with others. It's not just what you know, or who you know, but how well you get along with others.
An Effective Leadership Is People
Whenever a group needs inspiration, motivation and guidance they seek a good leader. Leadership is an art of using the skills of human psychology to motivate, influence and direct people in achieving common objectives through which they guide the society towards right direction. From the evolution of human being till now the great leaders has guided and shaped the society for the prosperity and happiness of the mankind. Their thoughts, vision and efforts had made this world better place to live. With their responsible and tactful ability of guidance they had serve the mankind by leading and guiding the various groups of the society. Religion, politics, defense, organization, community in every field the success and achievements depends upon the competence of the leaders and their efforts to influence and motivate others to accomplish the group goals or agendas.
In the society a good leadership always starts in a family. A family is a small group of individuals who are relatively and emotionally connected with, and interdependent on each other. Every family is lead by the most influential adult member of the family to whom other members have full faith. The prosperity, happiness and growth often depend upon the main adult leader of the family. If the family have good leading member then all the other members would have good moral values and ethics, and they are often cultured and well mannered. This family culture enhances love, emotional attachment, mutual understanding and responsibility among all members of the family. Family members will always maintain good relationship with each other if they lead by good adult family member who possess principle based moral values required to run a family.
Religions always need an ethical leader in the society for imparting the ethical values of peace and non-violence in their followers. Religious leaders play a great role to impart good culture and traditional values in the society in every generation. They help people in the society to understand the true meaning and purpose of their life by guiding them with their valuable moral and ethical thoughts. Leadership responsibility of spiritual leader involves the application of spiritual, moral and ethical values and principles of the religion to motivate the followers towards their religion for communal, social and religious harmony and peace in the society.
Politics and defense system both includes in the society. They are essential areas of the society where competent leadership is always required. Competent political leaders come from the society to serve their people and to run the political and administration system of the whole country. For proper economic growth and modernization of the society and country, an ideal political leader in a society is a must. Ideal political leaders are responsible to make the society better place to live and prevention of corruption in various administration systems in the society. The strong defense system in any country often depends on the success of political system in the country. Security is one of the essential elements for the growth of commerce, business and industry in any society. Strong leadership in army, navy and air force ensures the proper security of the country which makes society more secure and fearless which is essential for the growth and development of the society. Thus, society can ensure its security for prosperity with strong leadership in the defense system.
In conclusion leadership is an essential element of the civilization. Through competent leadership people groups in everywhere in the world ensure modernization, economic growth and security in the society. Leadership with moral values and ethics always brings happiness and prosperity to the society and mankind. Society who leads by intellectual leaders is often better than heaven.
