"How old are you?" the educator inquired. "Twenty-three." "You should begin twenty-three years ago."
What is the message? The single most important thing a parent can do to educate a child is to provide the child with a good role model. An individual has to strive his whole lifetime to become the type of person she wants her child to become.
The most important people in the world in the child's eyes are his parents. A child's mother and father are his first and most important teachers. The behavior of a child's parents leaves a permanent impression in the child's subconscious mind.
Why is this so? The reason is that the most reliable source of priorities and values in a child's eyes is his parents. Children have an innate trust in their parents. Children believe that everything their parents say and do is the correct and proper way to behave.
We all wish our children would do what we say and not what we do. However, this is not how the mind of a child works. The intellect of a child is undeveloped. As a result, children function an emotional level, absorbing more from what they see and hear around them than from what they are taught.
What is the take home message? The main thing for you to realize is that you have far more influence on your child than you probably realize. Your child is going to pattern himself after you. That is how nature set it up. Your job as a parent is to be the best role model that you can be. So this may be hard, but that is the reality.
The following is a story I heard recently that brings out the extent to which your child learns from your actions.
A certain kindergarten teacher once warned a group of parents to be careful how they behave in front of their children.
"By the way your children play in school," she said. "I know which of you treat each other respectfully. I am well aware of what kind of language you use in your home. I know everything about how you behave in your home by the way your child plays, talks, and behaves."
Remember, you might think that everything that goes on in your home behind closed doors is hidden from the world, but it is not. Your child sees everything. Your child is going to take your behavior and broadcast it to the world. You had better take care to ensure that your child is broadcasting to the world something that you want the world to see.
Being A Role Model
He was alone.
He was 3 million light years from home.
....but when it came to the crunch, our favourite alien from the 80's, E.T., knuckled down and phoned home using an old coat hanger, a Speak & Spell, and a record player. That's what I call ingenuity.
Time and time again it has proven to be awesome formula for a story ? as the A-Team demonstrated. Trapped in a cow shed by a small army equipped with machine guns and hand grenades, they would fight back with their secret weapon ? inventiveness. After five minutes of welding together some odds and ends, they would smash out in a blaze of glory.... firing cabbages or whatever.
The irony is that this type of resourcefulness could be the solution to a true life tight spot that mankind has gotten himself into. Global warming is the ultimate predicament. It's a pickle to end all pickles. If all those hours in front of the T.V. have taught us anything, we should know that the answer is of course to get creative.
Did you know that the average lifespan of a computer is just two years; after that it's normally deemed useless before being buried or burnt. I'm sorry to say it, but as far as environmental creativity goes, mankind is a retard. Perhaps it has something to do with all the perpetual ads telling us to buy another PC, but that's no excuse. Disposing of a functioning computer after such a short time has to madness.
John Delaney is one man clued up to this lunacy ? in August 2007 PCmag published a great article, ?15 Ways to Reinvent Your PC?. However, this might be too little, too late. The mass consumption frenzy of western societies has already started to take its toll. About 460,000 Chinese die prematurely each year from breathing polluted air and drinking dirty water, according to a World Bank study. Then there is the long term impact on global warming. The future is seems grim, especially when you consider that in fact consumerism in the west that is driving the industrialisation in China. That's the last thing going through the heads of shoppers in John Lewis or JC Penney.
And that appears to be the nub of the problem. It's everybody's problem and thus it is construed as nobody's problem. Global warming issues are very much held at arms length by most, and the efforts of those who take it seriously are in no way in proportion to the problem.
