Built In Wine Cellars

    View:
Now, you may not have a basement that you can convert into a wine cellar, but you don't need to worry. A fully functioning wine storage facility can be just a few racks of wine bottles. The only thing you will have to accommodate for is temperature, humidity, and making sure the wine bottles aren't exposed to sunlight.

While storage racks can be built by the owner of the home, it may be necessary to call in experts in order to install the appropriate heating, ventilation and air conditioning needed to maintain their wines at a constant temperature and humidity.

Most wine cellars operated by distributors of vintage wine will maintain a constant temperature of about 55-degrees Fahrenheit as well as a low humidity level. Free standing or built in wine cellars are available in many styles and designs to be worked into the structure of the home. The prices also vary from affordable to high end custom prices.

Home Wine Storage Units Keep Wine Chilled

Some of the most popular residential wine cellars for use by those with at least six bottles in storage, may also be refrigerated to maintain the wine at a temperature ready to drink. While most wines are recommended to be consumed when slightly chilled, there are some that age better and taste better closer to room temperature.

Some of the larger, small-capacity units holding between 12 and 60 bottles can be built into cabinets and kept under lock and key to prevent them from being used by unauthorized persons and those who are under the legal drinking age. Protecting the content of wine cellars is important, but so is protecting the integrity of the users. Standing cabinets with locking doors can also be used as wine cellars when the placement of a countertop unit is not feasible.

For considerably large collections, separate storage areas can be used whether in a lower level of the house or on the same floor as the main rooms. For most, wine cellars represent their love of the beverage. These connoisseurs usually desire to have many different types of wine from many different vineyards available with which to treat their guests.

If you like wine and tend to always have a couple bottles on hand why not keep them in a wine cellar? It will age the wine better, allow you to control the temperature of the wine, and will be sure to impress any dinner guests that enter your home. Remember wine storage facilities come in many styles and sizes so you should be able to find one that fits your decor and your budget.
Built In Wine Cellars
If you're a wine collector, chances are you've had to store some of your collection for an extended period. Most wine lovers with large collections own specialty storage solutions, whether it is multiple wine racks or refrigerators designed for wine storage. Still others feel that storing wine in a basement is sufficient.

A few years ago at a dinner party, we served a bottle of wine from one of our favorite New Mexico wineries, regaling our friends with how much we enjoyed it at the tasting room. To our disappoinment, the wine tasted well below expectations when opened and served. Only later did we learn that we'd stored the wine improperly, which accounted for the off taste.

Humidity

The wine we'd bought was stored in a very dry area of our house, which accounted for its uneven taste. We have subsequently learned to store wine at 50% to 70% humidity levels. Luckily, our new wine cellar has built in humidity controls, thereby keeping our wines stored at ideal humidty levels.

Temperature

Extreme temperatures are an enemy to wine, whether it's too hot or too cold. Wine is best stored at 55 to 57 degrees. A good wine cellar takes temperature levels into consideration and even allows you to arrange different temperature zones for specific storage needs. Also, air circulating fans should be designed into wine cellars to help maintain a constant temperature and humidity level.

Light

Infiltrating light is the last of wine's big three enemies. Always keep your wines away from excess sunlight. Even wines in dark colored bottles should not be exposed to direct sunlight as in addition to the ultraviolet rays, sunlight affects the internal bottle temperature. Make absolutely sure your wine cellar or other storage area has minimal light, especially if you're storing white wine or sensitive red varieties.

Other Factors

Your wine cellar should be isolated from vibration as much as possible. Believe it or not, excess vibration is another element that will tamper with the taste of your wine. Wherever you store your wine, keep it as free from vibration as possible.

Wine collecting is a rewarding hobby, and a little attention to detail will help you enjoy your wine to its fullest potential. Keep temperature and humidity conditions at optimal levels, and store your wine in a dark, quiet place. Doing so will allow you the best of payoffs - great wine that tastes great. Cheers!
