When patients have a liberal loss of bone from dental infections, they will generally have a high ionic calcium level in the blood. People who have freedom from tooth decay generally have an ionic calcium level of the blood that is normal or above normal. Individuals who usually have high ionic calcium levels of the blood tend to have bones which are looserknit and less dense. They respond readily to local anesthetics.
People having high ionic calcium levels rarely have condesing osteitis or spicules of bone work loose after tooth extractions. Individuals with high ionic calcium levels of the blood quite regularly develop periodontal disease.
Other Blood Systemic Changes: Dental infections reduce the body's normal alkalinity reserve in the blood of patients and animals. The removal of infected teeth in some individuals results in an improvement of the blood sugar relationship. The presence of dental infections increases the uric acid of the blood.
Life in every form appears to be dependent upon free ionic calcium. The functions of cells - whether excessive, below normal activity, or in dysfunction - are either affected or directly controlled by the concentration of ionic calcium. A person's vital capacity and vital efficiency are both inseparable from and dependent upon calcium metabolism. Most of these various discoveries will be as new to new to dentists today as they were when Weston Price reported them.
The subject which occupied most of Dr. Price's research time was the multiple roles calcium plays in the functions of the body. These studies virtually forced themselves upon him as medical and dental literature contained little information about calcium and its important functions.
A list of calcium functions follows:
* Every cell is dependent on the presence of ionic calcium.
* It is used in teeth and bones and the movement of muscles.
* It is required for the rhythmic action of the heart and the intestines.
* It is essential for the clotting of blood.
* It plays a role in infections, pregnancy, and in the maintenance of the acid-alkaline balance.
* Its presence or absence is a factor in the formation of tooth decay, pyorrhea, and the degenerative disease.
The great contribution made by Melvin Page, D.D.S., which have advanced some of the Price findings were discussed; for instance, how routine calcium and phosphorous blood test readings can be used to balance body chemistry.
Dr. Price showed beginning awareness of what Page discovered later when wrote, "What is important is not so much the presence or absence of an available supply of calcium, such as the calcium in foods,as it is the mechanisms that govern the metabolism of calcium".
Another great finding was that of the relationship between the thyroid gland's activity and that of the parathyroid.
