Canker sores are shallow, painful sores on the soft tissue or membranes of the mouth. They are usually red or may sometimes have a white coating over them. You might get them on the inside of your lips, the insides of your cheeks, the base of your gums or under your tongue. Canker sores are different from fever blisters, which usually are on the outside of your lips or the corners of your mouth.



According to the National Institute of Dental Health some Canker Sores may be caused by a bacterium. It is believed that anyone that has repeated outbreaks may be allergic to some substance in the bacterium's make up. Canker sore suffers should avoid sugar, citrus fruits and spicy foods.

Canker sores are common, can occur at any age, but usually first appear when you are between the ages of 10 and 20 years old. Cold Sores are caused by a form of the herpes simplex virus and are very extremely contagious. Canker Sores can be painful but are not contagious. So you can't spread canker sores by sharing food or kissing someone. Cold sores are almost always found on the lips and do not often spread to the soft tissues of the mouth.
