Colon Cancer Colorectal Cancer

    View:
Colorectal cancer is also known as colon cancer or bowel cancer. It refers to cancer in the colon, rectum and appendix. It is found that many colorectal cancers develop from polyps in the colon. These mushroom-like growths are more often than not, benign and not therefore not life threatening. But some may become cancerous over time. You would need a colonoscopy for a diagnosis of colorectal cancer. Colorectal cancer treatment usually involves surgery followed by chemotherapy.

While colorectal cancer has been studied to be one of the most common forms of inherited cancers, the condition of the average digestive system must be taken into consideration. After all, can it be truly said that the genes in the human body have mutated fast enough in 100 years to cause an inherited disease?

Since many people also show many other digestive disorders, natural health experts pinpoint the cause to be toxins. Toxins can come from various sources such as dietary and environmental factors. To prevent colorectal cancer, therefore, a colon cleanse would be beneficial. This process can heal herniations of the colon and polyps. In addition, a colon cleanse is soothing to the intestinal tract, relieving it years of accumulated waste.

Colon toxicity also results from the growth of parasites and unhealthy bacteria. This can add to the problem of constipation, irritable bowel syndrome and gas. To a great extent, it is impossible to avoid toxins altogether while living in the modern world with its many conveniences. The only way around the toxicity issue is to do regular colon cleanse.

Do note, however, that a colon cleanse would not be suitable if you have serious problems or are already on medications. You should always check with your physician to make sure that you are safe to do one.

There are several ways to do a colon cleanse for the prevention of colorectal cancer. You can get colon cleansing herbs from your local health store. The benefits of cleansing are several. They include less bloatedness, more energy and easy bowel movements of at least once a day. You also strengthen your immune system and improve your overall health with a colon cleanse.
Colon Cancer Colorectal Cancer

Colon cancer is a type of colorectal cancer characterized by abnormal cell growth in the colon, which creates a cancerous tumor. The term colorectal cancer is sometimes used interchangeably with colon cancer as colorectal cancer refers to cancer of either the colon or the rectum. This kind of illness ranks third in the list of the most common forms of cancer and are most often prevalent in people over 50 years old, but can occur in patients of any age.

Cancers of the colon or of the rectum are highly treatable if they are diagnosed in the early stages of the disease. However, many people often are not diagnosed in time as early symptoms are not always recognized and, when they are, people are somewhat hesitant to discuss the details of their symptoms with a doctor.

The symptoms of colon cancer include:

  • Abdominal pain, bloating, or discomfort
  • Bloody stool
  • Long, thin stool (often described as pencil-like)
  • Unintended weight loss
  • Loss of appetite
  • Changes in normal bowel habits (rectal bleeding, diarrhea, constipation, or feeling an inability to completely empty the bowel).

Each year nearly 150,000 new cases of colon cancer are reported. There is no identifiable cause for it, but the following are some of the factors that may increase the risk of its development:

-Gender (Both men and women are equally prone to developing colorectal cancers. However, men tend to develop rectal cancer at slightly higher rates, while women are more prone to colon cancer.)
-Age (Colon cancer can be developed at any age, but the chances are increased in people over the age of 50 years old.)
-Diabetes
-Obesity
-Cigarette smoking
-Alcohol consumption
-Poor diet
-Family history
-Personal history.

People with a family history of colorectal cancer are slightly more prone to developing cancer of the colon or rectum. If more than one family member has been diagnosed with either of these forms of cancer, the risk is even higher. Also, diets high in calories and fat, and low in fiber add to an increased risk of developing the disorder. Anyone over the age of 50 should undergo regular screening for colorectal cancer, but anyone in any of the above risk groups should begin screening earlier.

Screening normally consists of an annual rectal exam, including stool samples. Some exams may require a scope to be inserted into the rectum in order to view the entire bowel. If there is cause for concern or further examination of the colon's tissue, a biopsy may be ordered for a closer analysis. If cancer is discovered, other tests, such as an ultrasound, CT scan or X-ray would be done in order to determine whether the cancer has spread to other areas. Of particular concern is the liver as it is one of the more likely places that colorectal cancer spreads to.

Because the risk of colon cancer can be reduced by a high fiber diet, proper weight management (including exercise) and by not smoking, it is highly recommended that people opt for healthier lifestyles and decrease their chances of developing this type of cancer, and others, as much as possible.

Anyone who has experienced some of the symptoms familiar to colon cancer or who are in one of the risks groups for the disease, is advised to seek cancer screening as early as possible since colorectal cancer responds very well to treatment in the earliest stages.
