Generally chances of complications after a eye surgery is about 5%. That might be a vary low number, but still there are risks. It has been observed that most of the complications arise out of the surgeon's inexperience. As the experience of the surgeon increases, the cases of complications decrease. Of course there are other factors which can cause complications.



These would include excessive farsightedness, nearsightedness or astigmatism; large pupils (if the diameter of the pupil is greater than the zone to be treated then undergoing LASIK surgery can cause vision impairment, especially under low light conditions); dry eyes before operation; history of eye diseases like keratoconus. Here we will discuss some of the complications.

Contrast sensitivity

The capacity to distinguish an item from its neighboring backdrop is a problem of contrast sensitivity. The reduction in contrast sensitivity is a comparatively common occurrence after eye surgery, particularly in patients with high amounts of myopia.

After surgery almost all patients experience some degree of contrast sensitivity, but that goes away in the first few weeks or months after the operation. But if it seems to stay for a longer time then it would be advisable to go back to your surgeon for remedial action.

Double Vision and Ghosting

The occurrence of a second, generally fainter, image of an object next to the original object, creating an indistinct vision is what double vision or ghosting is. This problem is generally an effect of irregular astigmatism brought on by surgery. Like several other LASIK-related vision problems, double vision often goes away over a period of time. This is usually the time during which the cornea heals. But severe cases can lead to permanent complications.

Halos

Due to this problem one can see halos around lights. It must be noted that corneal swelling after the operation can cause halos for the first few weeks. In fact it is quite normal. However, if you think that the halo has persisted over a normal period of time, then it might be necessary for you to go for treatment again. Corrective lenses or glasses can also be an option.

Starbursts

Another surgery related complication, starbursts cause a person to see lights as blurred. Often spikes or rays of light seem to radiate out of the center of the light source. Generally it affects night time vision, but in some cases, it might be a problem for all light sources at any time of the day.
