By definition, family planning is when a couple chooses the number of children they will have, and the time between births. Whether you're just starting to think about having a family or your considering adding to an already existent household, it's a good idea to think ahead when it comes to planning for your new addition. Below are five important tips to keep in mind:



Make sure you are financially prepared. Children require a lot of care, but they also require a significant amount of money. From everyday necessities, such as medical care, food, clothing, bottles, diapers and furniture to toys and other accessories that will add enjoyment to your little one's day, financial stability is one thing to consider when planning your family.

Space for a growing family. A child may be small in the beginning, but it's important that they have plenty of room to grow. What was once a comfortable space for you and your spouse may not be enough for a blossoming family. In addition to the number of bedrooms and bathrooms, it may be a good idea to look at your yard space. Children love to play outside, which is why outdoor space can be an important deciding factor when buying a house. If you need the extra space, consider upgrading to another home.

Neighborhood Knowhow. Once you have children, it's more important than ever before to consider your surroundings. Many growing families choose to live in areas that are specifically catered to their needs, which may include a community park for the children to enjoy, close proximity to schools, family-oriented activities and safety.

Pet policies. Children may love animals, but they may not always be safe around them. This is especially true with an infant or toddler who may not recognize the possible dangers associated with animals. Believe it or not, even the family pet can turn into a problem if you aren't careful. Certain breeds of dogs are known to have aggressive tendencies and, therefore, should not be allowed near an infant or child. Even cats can present a problem, especially if your child should have an allergy to animals. If you're thinking of starting a family or adding to your current one, take the time to consider any pets that you may have and whether or not they pose a potential problem for your little one.

Health matters. A family requires a lot of responsibility and, more often than not, caring for children is a very demanding job. Your child will be counting on you for love, care and support for his/her entire life, but especially so during the first 18 years.
