Dementia And Alzheimers Disease

    View:
- "The study found a cognitively active person in old age was 2.6 times less likely to develop dementia and Alzheimer's disease than a cognitively inactive person in old age. - "Wilson says the study also found frequent cognitive activity during old age, such as visiting a library or attending a play, was associated with reduced risk of mild cognitive impairment, a transitional stage between normal aging and dementia, and less rapid decline in cognitive function." - "If you want your mind to stay healthy into your golden years, don't worry, be happy.

In short, both stress management and brain exercise are critical, according to those recent studies. In previous articles have also mentioned the important roles of nutrition and physical exercise.

Now, we shouldn't expect magic. We just came across an article titled Best Computer ?Brain Games' for Senior Citizens to Delay Alzheimer's Disease. We see this confusion often-that headline is based on no clinical research. Some names that appear in the article are Posit Science, MindFit, Dakim and MyBrainTrainer. And there are more programs: what about Happy Neuron, Lumosity, Spry Learning and Captain's Log. Not to mention Nintendo Brain Age.

Some of those programs have real science that, at best, shows how some specific cognitive skills (like memory, or attention) can be trained and improved-no matter the age. This is a very important message that hasn't yet percolated through many brains out there: we know today that computer-based software programs can be very useful to train some cognitive skills, better than alternative methods (paper and pencil, classroom-based, just "daily living").

Now, no single program can make any claim that it specifically delays/ prevents Alzheimer's Disease beyond general statements such as that Learning Slows Physical Progression of Alzheimer's Disease (hence the imperative for lifelong learning) and that mental stimulation-together with other lifestyle factors such as nutrition, physical exercise and stress management may contribute to build a Cognitive Reserve that may reduce the probability of problems. Tools such as these may be helpful to delay the appearance of some symptoms, but we don't know how to delay the disease. And there is no evidence that one particular program is better than another for that purpose of delaying the disease. Or better than playing the piano, or learning German.

Fortunately, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the Alzheimer's Association have partnered to launch the Healthy Brain Initiative. We have no doubt that scientific research will become more and more useful in delaying problems. For the time being, in our view, we should view brain fitness programs as useful tools to train and develop specific skills, whether it is auditory processing in the case of Posit Science, a variety of them at MindFit, working memory at Cogmed, peripheral vision and others through IntelliGym. We can improve our quality of life, productivity and mental faculties. All these tools probably help to reduce the probability of developing Alzheimer's and other dementias (so I personally make sure to learn new things and skills as often as I can, and using these tools is part of that), but that shouldn't be the main reason why people use them since it is an indirect relationship at this point.

For more information, the National Institute on Aging provides a great article on Can Alzheimer's Disease be Prevented?. We offer you guidance and a SharpBrains checklist on How to Select the Right Brain Fitness Program for you.

In short: long live lifelong learning and brain exercise! long live important lifestyle habits such as good nutrition, physical exercise, stress management!! But please, take the Alzheimer's-related claims that companies may make with a grain of salt.

Dementia And Alzheimers Disease
Alzheimer's disease is currently the world's leading cause of dementia, decreasing the quality of life for millions of older people, worldwide. It was estimated that in 2006, up to 26.6 million people over the globe were affected by Alzheimers disease. Alzheimer's causes memory and cognitive loss, confusion, anger and mood swings, and eventually leads to the loss of minor and major bodily functions. It is unclear whether current conventional treatments for Alzheimer's disease only mange the symptoms, or if they actually slow the progression of the disease. However, it is clear that there are many preventative measures which work. One of the newest to be discovered is rosemary, a favorite companion of roast lamb and extremely easy therapy to administer.

Alzheimer's progresses over the course of years. Some of the earliest symptoms may be evident up to 8 years before clinical diagnosis is possible according to current guidelines. People experience memory loss, difficult paying attention, and sometimes difficulty conceptualizing relationships and semantics. This may progress so that a patient with Alzheimer's disease forgets how to do things with their body, like going to the toilet, or using a fork to eat. Vocabulary shrinks, and speech difficulties become more severe and more common. Eventually, apathy and exhaustion are quite common -these are separate from the usual lowered energy of old age, which unfortunately often accompanies Alzheimer's.

Alzheimer's disease is currently thought to be caused by lowered biosynthesis of the neurotransmitter acetylcholine, and amyloid beta deposits. However, despite being relatively certain of the cause (or at least the major neurological symptom) of Alzheimer's disease, we are still not able to completely cure the disease once it has begun, or pinpoint the exact factor which causes some individuals to develop it.

It has recently been determined that one of the best things you can do to prevent Alzheimer's disease, if you have a family history, is to use rosemary. Rosemary was thought by the Ancient Greeks to have great power for improving memory, and students used to wear wreaths of it around their necks while sitting examinations to improve their mental faculties.

The ingredient in rosemary which helps prevent Alzheimer's disease is carsonic acid. It can help prevent Alzheimer's symptoms and keep brain function intact long into old age. Carsonic acid protects the brain against free radical damage, and can also be efficacious in the prevention of stroke and general neurodegeneration.

Rosemary is supposed to prevent normal aging of the brain, and also improve memory. It does this by activating a signaling pathway in the brain, which protects brain cells from the effects of free radical damage.

This is not rosemary's only positive effect on your body, though. It has been implicated in preventing breast cancer, by balancing out female hormones. The free radical fighting properties also help stop aging of the skin, and aid the liver in eliminating toxins from the body. This helps to make us feel healthier and increase energy. We have also known for years that free radicals are important factors in the development of cancer -anything that fights them also gives you general protection from cancer.

These natural therapies are an excellent complement to conventional treatments for Alzheimer's, and also critical in Alzheimer's prevention.
