The difficulty with setting up any kind of office space in the home is twofold. First, there are usually space constraints. The space allocated to a home office is often small. Many times the home office is tucked into a corner of the kitchen or a guest bedroom. Large commercial desks would just take over the space if they even fit at all. But smaller desks are not always practical because of limited storage and workspace. Think about all of the equipment that a well stocked and functional home office needs. At a minimum there will be a computer and printer - front and center. Add to that modems, fax machines, phones, shredders, charging stations, and everything else that needs to be plugged in and your desk is already full. And I didn't even mention personal and work files or office supplies.

Obviously, selecting the right desk will take some thought and advanced planning and the decision should not be take lightly. The last thing you want is to select a piece of furniture that you are completely unhappy with.

While functionality will be the most important factor, it is not the only one. An ideal desk for the home office will also fit in with the existing decor of the room. Most formal styled and attractive desks are not too spacious or usable. Sure they look nice but when space is at a premium you are not buying a desk for eye candy only.

Is there a solution to this problem? Yes and no. When it comes to a home office desk you need to think outside of the box. Instead of buying a traditional desk, look for separate but related components. A large formal table can serve as the main working space. A set of portable, rolling file cabinets can serve as drawers. File cabinets come in all colors and veneers so the choices are many. Look into wall shelving above the table for books and reference material. And a stack of hatboxes underneath the table can handsomely hide office supplies. Look in not so traditional places for your home office furniture.

When it comes to your home office, do not compromise design and space just because you cannot find the right desk. The answer may just lie in your imagination.
