Dlt Iv Tape Cartridge

    View:
It is better to inspectthe tape media before it is loaded into standalone tape drive or autoloader. Inspectionof the tape media may not be possible every time, therefore the media must beinspected when the background of tape media is not known, tape cartridge isdropped, failure of tape drive as soon as the tape is inserted or if the drivefails periodically/repeatedly. Checking the condition of the data tapecartridge and verification of the tape leaders that they are not damaged ortorn can help to avoid repeated tape drive failures. Checking the tape mediatakes only few moments and hence makes sure uninterrupted data backupprocess.

Tape technology of DLT(digital linear tape) has mechanism of ?latch leader? in which the drive isengaged onto the leader of tape cartridge and then the media is pulled into thetape drive. If the tape cartridge drops and the cartridge leader damages, thensometimes there are chances that the tape drive may cause fatal or load errorsso the tape drive might need replacement. Cartridge leader is the major andcore element in the DLT tape drive's functionality. Just open the door of theDLT tape cartridge for checking the cartridge leader that it is damaged or not.Door of the DLT tape cartridge is spring loaded and it can be opened byreleasing it gently. There are ?reel locks? in inner side of DLT cartridge. When DLT tape is not inserted into drive, spinning or moving of ?media spool'is prevented by these ?reel locks?. If the tape is dropped accidentally, thenit might damage the reel locks of DLT cartridge.

The tape media should becast off if is has misplaced cartridge leader because of failure of reel locks.Another easy method for reel lock's verification that they are in goodcondition is to gently shake the tape media, and incase there is a rattlingsound from the cartridge replace the cartridge. Other checking area of the DLTtape cartridge is the ?cartridge hub?. The hub should be properly spring loadedand correctly seated inside the tape cartridge. The media hub should returnproperly to its seated position after it is pressed gently. If it does notreside properly to its seated position or if the leader and the loop are notvisible any more, then the tape should be discarded. DLT tapes whose leaderloops are snapped must also be replaced. Most of the times seeing the tear orsnap in tape cartridge's leader is difficult. So another easy method to see thetear is checking the leader's tension with the help of ballpoint pen. Do notuse pencil for checking.

Therefore the conclusion aboutthe discussion of checking the tape cartridge is that they should be checked tosee if there are any signs of cracks, damage or tear to the casing of the tapecartridge. Make sure that there are no screws missing and that the DLT tapesare intact. The door locks must be spring loaded and should be in properworking condition. The switch of ?write protect? should be movable but makesure that when it is set to a specific position, it remains in that position. Cartridgeleader of the DLT data tape needs to be checked with ballpoint pen and itshould remain intact. The ?hub? needs to be spring loaded and it must becentered in the DLT tape cartridge. Make sure that the Digital linear tapecartridge has no labels on it besides the label slot. Gently vibrate the DLTtape to check whether there is any kind of rattles. If there are any rattles, then the tape cartridge must be disposed off.

Dlt Iv Tape Cartridge
The Digital Linear Tape (DLT) is a highly reliable magnetic data storage format which was introduced in the early 1980's. The DLT tape is considered to be one of the most efficient data tapes having increased storage capacity. The DLT technology product DLT 4 tape provides extreme reliability and can be used with small and large computer networks. The DLT-IV tapes include Maxell 183270, Hewlett-Packard (HP) C5141F, Sony DL4TK88, Quantum THXKD02, Fuji 26112088, IBM 59H3040, Imation 11776 and many others. All these tapes combine enterprise class features and deliver unmatched performance and durability.

The DLT IV tape minimizes the error rate by using the sophisticated error detection and correction method. The DLT IV tape uses Metal Particle (MP) technology make the tape durable for making five hundred thousand head passes even under humid conditions and worst-case temperatures. The DLT-IV tapes use a space saving single reel cartridge that allows more capacity for data storage. The tape employs multiple heads, adaptive-cache buffering and longitudinal-serpentine tracks to improve its performance.

The Sony DLT-IV tape ensures reduced error rate which makes it ideal for storing critical data backup applications. The DL4TK88 is an ideal solution to archiving requirements and high volume backups. The Sony has used advanced defect-detection system that assures error free data recording and a perfect head to tape interface. The Sony DLT-IV has exceptional capacity for data storage. It stores data up to 40 GB (native). The tape can also store 80 GB of data in compressed mode. The Sony DLT-IV tape transfers data at a high transfer speed of 6 MB/s (native). It can also transfer the data at an ultra high speed of 12 MB/s in compressed mode. The Strong cartridge design prevents the DLT-IV Sony from damage and improves its durability. The Sony DL4TK88 uses ATOMM technology which allows high density recording with accuracy.

The Maxell DLT-IV data tape maintains a log-index at the tape's head which provides extremely high speed data retrieval. The Maxell DLT-IV tapes are designed to be compatible with the future generation DLT drives. This enables you to retrieve your data from your Maxell DLT-IV tape with any other DLT drive. These tapes are ideal choice for high end computer and network server data backup. Like other DLT-IV tapes, the Maxell DLT-IV can store data up to 40 GB in native and 80 GB in compressed mode. These tapes transfer the data at a high speed of 12 MB/s in compressed mode. The length of the tape is five hundred and fifty seven meters. The archival life of the tape is thirty years. Normally it does one million head passes within its lifetime. The reel motor in the cartridge electronically controls the tension and speed of the tape.

The large enterprises highly recommend DLT-IV tapes. This is because these tapes provide extra protection to the user's data. The DLT-IV tapes can be used with all the known operating systems including Windows (98, 2000, XP, Vista), LINUX, UNIX and all the other main softwares. The Brands which support DLT-IV tapes involve Sony, Hewlett-Packard (HP), Fuji, IBM, Imation, Dell and many others. The Personal Computer users also prefer to uses DLT-IV tapes as it serves the users with huge data storage capacity at affordable price.
