Companion Dogs: As the name suggests, companion dogs were created to keep people company. Due to the single job, companion dogs are mostly small sized. This is also because it would be quite difficult to lug around a large companion dog. These dogs are generally inhouse dogs, and cannot live in the outside. They are obviously weaker than the bigger and larger dogs, however, they have the same courage and spirit and do fall in spats with larger size dogs, therefore, they have to be protected by their owners. They also wish for the company of their owners more than any other breed of dogs.

Herder Dogs: These are generally found on farms and in villages. This breed was developed to control large flocks of sheep and cattle by farmers. Though they still retain those capabilities, they have today become a domesticated dog breed, which can be found as a pet dog in a city just like any other dog breed. These dogs are energetic, serious and smart. They are the best proponents for togetherness and have a family mentality in them. They like to have the whole family in the same room, so that they can keep an eye on all of them together. They are protective of people and make excellent watchdogs. They have a tendency to nip at people or even bump into them, due to their training in the past. But with a good and consistent training, they learn to behave in a proper fashion.

Hounds: The oldest types of hunting dogs. There are two types of hounds, the dogs that hunt by sight and the dogs that hunt by scent, respectively called sight hounds and scent hounds. Hounds that hunt by sight are sleek and fast. Scent hounds are tough and reliable. Both of these have been bred for centuries for the hunting job.

Though hounds can be trained, they have to understand their training. Hounds are known to have their own minds, and if they do not think it is a good idea, they will ignore you. Hounds also require a tough leash and an open yard for themselves.

These are just two of the dog breeds that are available today. There are several dog breeds. People wishing to have a pet dog should do the proper research on which dog breed would be good for them to have as pet. The internet is the best place to know more information about dog breeds. It will have all the dog breed info you would ever need.

The Papillon loves to exercise outdoors but an apartment will do just fine as long as she can get regular walks. She is a dainty, fine boned dog that loves to be pampered. She learns fast and loves to travel with her master. She may not get along with other dogs and should be socialized early for other pets. She gets along fine with older children but younger children may hurt her by accident. As a reminder, never leave a child unsupervised with a puppy or dog.

Approximate Adult Size

The approximate adult size (two years old or older) of the male Papillon is 8 to 11 inches to the withers (highest point of the shoulder) and 8 to 10 pounds. The female ranges from 8 to 11 inches to the withers and 7 to 9 pounds.

Special Health Considerations

Most dog breeds have certain inherited health problems associated with that specific breed and the Papillon is no exception. Although considered a very healthy breed, be on the look out for Slipped Patella, low blood sugar, and Progressive Retinal Atrophy. This disease list is an informative guideline only. Other diseases may also be significant threats, please contact your veterinarian for a complete list.

She should visit the veterinarian several times in the first year for shots, boosters and check up. Then, as an adult, she should visit the veterinarian yearly for shots and check up. As she gets older, six years and on, she should visit the veterinarian twice a year for check ups and shots. Remember; avoid feeding your dog sweets.

Grooming

The Papillon has a silky, long, fine, flowing coat without an undercoat. They shed average and need to be combed and brushed daily. Brushing will help her maintain a clean and healthy coat, help you keep a closer eye on her health and strengthen your emotional bond with her.

Her teeth should be brushed at least twice a week with toothpaste and toothbrush designed for dogs. Brushing removes the accumulation of plaque and tartar which can cause cavities (rarely) and periodontal disease. Dog periodontal disease can lead to pain, loss of teeth, bad breath and other serious disease.

Her toenails may need to be examined for growth and clipped regularly. The toenails of the rear feet grow slower than the toenails of the front feet.

Life Span

The Papillon can live between 13 and 16 years with proper nutrition, medical care and excellent living conditions.

History

The Papillon comes from France where they were developed into a specific breed. They are an old breed that goes back as far as 700 years. They were first registered by the American Kennel Association in 1915.
