Dog Breeds For Kids

    View:
This club holds obedience competitions and dog shows, maintains dog standards and registers puppies of AKC-recognized breeds. In other words, it is the standard by which all dogs live to qualify as a purebred breed. There are over 100 different dog breeds registered with the AKC.

If you would like to register your puppy with the AKC, you will need papers from both parents. Purebred litters are registered shortly after the puppies are born. The breeder will get registration forms to enter individual puppies into the AKC registration when the litter is 2 months old. When the new owner of the puppy names their pet, they can register and send the application into the AKC for official recognition.

There are eight different types of AKC dog breeds, including the Hound Group, the Sporting Group, the Working Group, the Non-Working Group, the Toy Group and the Terrier Group. Each dog competes within their group and within its breed during competitions.

The Hound Group is dogs that work as excellent hunters and love to chase other animals. Some can be fastidious and measured or hasty and eager like the Greyhound.

Moving on, the Sporting Group refers to hard-working dogs that are energetic. They need a lot of exercise and will spend hours retrieving and spotting objects for their owners. Both the Cocker Spaniel and Golden Retriever are examples of the Sporting Group.

The Working Group is breeds such as the Doberman Pinschers or Rottweilers. Their main priority is to safeguard their territory and family. They typically have plenty of power and energy with strong protective instincts.

There is also the Non-Working Group, which is a category for dogs that do not belong to the other groups. Everything from the Standard Poodle to the Boston Terrier belong to this group.

As the name suggests, the Toy Group features dogs that are smaller in size, such as the Miniature Pinscher.

Finally, the Terrier Group shows animals that love to hunt mice, including Yorkies and Scottish Terriers.

There is yet another group called the Miscellaneous Group which is where the AKC puts new breeds that are still establishing themselves in the registry. While the AKC is still the most popular club in the United States, there are a number of other clubs, including the United Kennel Club, the American Canine Association, the Canine Kennel Club and the North American Purebred Dog Registry.

For any dogs born outside the United States that wish to be considered in the AKC, they owner can apply and allow the AKC to consider their application. British dogs, for example, go through the Kennel Club, while Australian dogs are registered in the Victorian Canine Association and Canadian dogs apply to the Canadian Kennel Club.

Overview

This breed is originally from York where they have been developed a hundred years ago from the Working terrier. This dog was originally known as the hunter of pests, but was later named for the Valley of the Aire in England. Later on, this dog was crossed with the Otterhound. This was done for them to become better swimmers. Airedale terriers pride themselves in the fact that they are very good watch- and guard dogs - and they also excel in hunting, tracking, military work and police work.

Temperament

Airedale Terrier is in general fine with children, but it is important to get them used to children from an early age onwards. It is very important for these dogs to feel appreciated and also loved. The Airedale terrier is a dog that is very brave and also very protective of its families. They get along well with strangers, and are very bright and clever dogs. This breed is very receptive and approachable. Airedale terriers love games that are fun, especially when they are still puppies. These dogs will always try to please its owners, especially if nothing else distracts their attention.

Care

Airedale terriers have hair that is tough and hard. This makes it difficult to groom these dogs. It is advised that the dead hairs of these dogs are plucked about two times during the course of the year. Airedale terriers can shed quite heavily, or they can shed no hair at all - this is all depended on the way that the coat is cut. It is very important to wash the beards of these dogs on a regular basis to prevent tangling - and also to keep it clean from food residue.

Training

Airedale Terriers are very clever, and this makes it easy for them to understand what is required of them. Try to bring in variety as a part of their training as these dogs will become stubborn should they be given the same instructions all the time. The training and exercises of these dogs should also be challenging. Airedale terriers will excel in dog sports and also in defence dog trials if they are given proper training.

Health problems

This breed of dogs is fairly tough, but some Airedale terriers might suffer from eye problems, hip dysphasia and also from skin infections. Should your Airedale Terrier suffer from dry skin, you can feed him omega-6 and omega-3 fatty acid oils as a part of their diet.
