The term mountain biking includes many different styles. The downhill bike is heavier than other mountain bikes to be able to fit the conditions. It weighs somewhere between forty and fifty pounds so forget about pedaling uphill once you're out there. If you've started your race, there's only one way to go and that's down. The bike has to be able to put up with extreme conditions so it is equipped with front and rear suspension and heavy tubing. There are many ways to improve you skills, the most important one is of course to practice, and then to practice a bit more and a bit more. There are tons of DVDs, books and sites on the internet where you can share ideas and tricks and watch stunts performed by professionals. This is also a great way to learn, and something you can bring with you once your actually out on the hillside. The only way to fully master it though, is to learn by the experience.

Downhill Mountain Bike Riding

Step 3: Learn to shift gears. Learn what they are for and their working. The higher gears go faster and are hard to pedal useful for descending the hill. Lower gears are easier to pedal and will work best when you are ascending the hill.
Step 3: Learn bike coasting by coasting some of your time without actually sitting on the bike and standing on pedals. Experiment as far as you can because that gets you to learn lots of things.
Step 4: Learn to pedal standing on your bike without relying on the seat of the bike similar to that of learning bicycle pedaling. Try doing it on flat ground with high gears then on hill with low gears.
Once you are pretty finished practicing these skill you are quite prepare for mountain bike riding. You can do this in a nearby place to your residence. Make sure you master these skills before you jump onto a mountain bike for the adventurous ride.
