Engine Keyword Optimization Research Search

This is an oversimplification, but there's evidence to support this. If you don't learn to choose the best and most targeted keywords for your campaign, your business will suffer greatly. Choosing the right keywords will determine your placement in search engines' most common searches.



How does one begin to find the right keywords? You're in luck. There are many tools available for the online marketer to take advantage of for their business. I'd like to give you the most popular one. What's best, it's free!

Google Keyword Tool. The gold standard for keyword optimization. Just search 'Google Keyword Tool' and you'll get it. Just type in your keyword, and commence with your search.

The secret is to learn how to interpret the data that you see. With each keyword or phrase, you'll see a bar denoting the advertiser competition for that keyword. These are words high on the list of online advertisers to bid on in their campaigns. The more popular the words, the higher the bid competition. The higher the bid competition, the more expensive your campaign will be. These can prove to be your e-business bread winner if you don't mind spending a lot of money in advertising. I've got a couple ways around this problem.

1. Choose words and phrases that are lesser known. If you take one of the words in your keyword search results and put them back into your search, you will find it broken down even further into more specialized niches. This can be a good thing for you since these words are not as popular and therefore much cheaper to bid on. Some keywords out there you can get away with paying literally pennies per click, so search carefully.

2. Pay close attention to the 'Local Monthly Data' column. This represents the number of searches that were done on this particular keyword or phrase in the last month the data was available. You can use the lower numbers to your advantage. For example, a keyword that has 4 million searches may seem like a winner, but you'll be paying through the nose for advertising costs since most advertisers are bidding top dollar for these words, so you'll be fighting for position based on the money you put up.

If you look for keywords with fewer searches, 3,000 for example with low advertiser competition, you can be sure in most cases that you'll be paying pennies per click. But the best part is that out of those 3,000 searchers, most of them will land squarely on your site as one of the first they see! Top position, plus cheap advertising, plus minimal competition equals money in your pocket!

3. Misspelled words. I may be overstepping the line here, and most experienced web advertisers would kill me if they knew I was spilling these beans, but misspelled keywords may be a goldmine for you. On your keyword tool search, you'll come across the common misspellings of people's search words. These words are rarely bid upon. That means you bid on them for pennies on the dollar and you could be seeing tens of thousands of clicks because so many people misspell words in the same way! Remember this! The more clicks, the more sales. The more sales, the louder your laughter will be on your way to the bank!

What is keyword optimization?

When a person opens up a search engine on their browser, they type in what they're searching for, let's say, dog leashes. The search engine then does a lighting fast search to find websites with the words 'dog leashes' in them. The search engine lists these websites in order of their keyword position, that is, which website has the most relevant information in relation to the keywords.

Let's say you sell pet products. As the advertiser, you want the searchers to land on your website as many times as possible. In order for this to happen, you increase your chances of having many people visit your site and spend money if your site pops up on a search. Optimally, it's best to be in the top ten positions on any search.

Now, the next question begs, "What is the best way to get a top ten position in a potential customer's search?". Well, this is where keyword optimization starts.

In setting up your pet products website or other marketing methods such as PPC, one of the options you have is to choose keywords that are most relevant to your website. For pet supplies, you might choose: leashes, pet food, aquariums, grooming, etc.. But it can go much deeper.

It's important to know where to look to find relevant keywords for potential customers to search. There are many free tools available for you to use. Google, Yahoo, and MSN are two of the major search engines that offer this service. Using algorithms, they assess advertiser competition and general keyword usage by each web searcher on their respective site. They provide useful data for you the advertiser to use to maximize your knowledge of who's searching for what. Poke around on these sites and learn these useful systems.

It gets very deep when you learn that keywords like, discount turtle food, exotic birds, ferret supplies, or lizard boutiques could be very useful tags (well, except for lizard boutiques!) for your website or ad campaign. You'll find on these free keyword tools that the lists are endless when it comes to relevant keywords, no matter how specialized the niche!

The general rule of thumb to the number of keywords to use is about 20 - 30 words or phrases for your page. You can narrow down this list considerably if you use the information above and find out which are the most useful to you and your business.
