So you are all for gun control. You stand firm to the belief that you do not need to carry a firearm for protection because if anyone were to attack you, the police are not far away. Okay. What if the police were further than you originally thought? Sure, the police want to protect citizens as well as they can, otherwise they probably would not have pursued the career. However, they are not legally obligated to protect us as individuals - they are only legally obligated to protect the public.



Take the case Warren v. District of Columbia, for example. Two women were at home in a townhouse and heard their third roommate being attacked downstairs. They repeatedly called the police and were told that help was on the way. Thirty minutes later, the two women heard silence coming from downstairs. Had the police arrived and helped the roommate? That is what the two women thought had happened, so they went downstairs. No. The police never came. However, the attackers were still there! The women were held captive, raped, robbed, beaten and underwent other lewd acts for the next fourteen hours. When they took the District of Columbia to court for not protecting them, the court said, "Courts have without exception concluded that when a municipality or other governmental entity undertakes to furnish police services, it assumes a duty only to the public at large and not to individual members of the community." The police were not held responsible.

Another case was that of Hartzler v. City of San Jose. Ruth Brunell called the police - not just once, but twenty times - to beg for protection from her husband. The last time she called, she explained that her husband had called her and said he was coming home to kill her. The police told her to call back when he got there. Her husband got to the house and stabbed her to death. She never got the chance to call the police again. When the San Jose police were sued, the court ruled that they were not liable for ignoring the citizen's calls for help.

Citizens owe it to themselves to be protected. The Second Amendment was written for a reason. There is not always going to be someone there to protect you.
