Building a successful team at work involves substantial planning and plenty of dedication. The use of various exercises or activities can ease team members into the process and enhance the effectiveness of implementing a team. There are many types of activities for team building. Games are a good way to build team morale in a fun way. A fun relaxed activity enables everyone to ease into the process while breaking the ice so there is no strange tension. Try some word games or letter games where everyone writes random words or letters on white cards. Then as a team, everyone must work together to create meaningful words and phrases. This could also be done with pictures, depending on how far you want to go with the game. Create random sentences or some that are directly work related. Though it is not recommended to organize games that have team members competing for serious rewards, simple fun rewards are alright. Create a fun game like a scavenger hunt that has your team members running around in small groups to recover specified objects like a certain newspaper or item from a specific delicatessen. The reward could be going home early on Friday or having a day off. Just keep it fair and light hearted. Competition between employees should always be casual and fun, otherwise you risk having people feel rewards are unfair.

Make a point of celebrating birthdays or special occasions in the workplace. This does not mean you have to go all out or do anything large or dramatic. Just a small gift that all employees receive equally is enough to show appreciation and make team members feel that they are viewed as people at work, not just the help. You would be surprised at how much of a difference a friendly show of respect and gratitude can make.

Make goal planning a regular activity. It is something important that all team members should be included in. By planning out future goals as a group, the importance and commitment is felt by everyone. Teams need to all be present rather than just informed by their leader. Draw up plans and schedules together so that everyone can contribute and feel that their input is valid.

Make a point to vary between serious, well structured team meetings and casual, relaxed ones. Though it might not seem like an exercise, it will significantly affect your team. Stiff, formal meetings are necessary at times but it is essential to kick back and take it easy too. You can not be serious all the time.
