Recently, it seems like the oil barons are out to empty our wallets. Gas prices have gone up threefold, along with everyday necessities, while our economy slows to a crawl. Most people are just trying to keep their heads above water, and need to learn some simple methods to improve gas mileage.
There are several methods that help to improve gas mileage, some of them that are very effective, and others that really don't make too much of a difference. It can be a bit of a pain trying to sift through them all, so I have gone to the trouble of finding the most common methods people are using right now to improve gas mileage, so I could pass them on to you.
First off, change your engine oil frequently, and get a tuneup. Nearly everyone knows that if your car is running properly, it will expend less energy than if it is bogging down because of mechanical problems. Basic things like installing a new air filter, changing cracked hoses, and regular oil and oil filter changes using the right weight oil with friction reducers can all improve gas mileage.
Another trick that works well, is getting rid of extra weight your car is carrying. Do away with luggage racks, since they create resistance, and decrease your gas mileage. Keeping your tires inflated to the maximum recommended pressure can also help to decrease resistance, the MPG gain is fairly small, but every little bit will help!
Another way to improve gas mileage is by exercising some self control. Drive at slower speeds. Try cruising on the highway at 55 mph, instead of 65 or 70. That will increase your gas mileage by as much as 25%. Keep in mind that also includes no speeding when the "police" aren't looking! You can also gain 14% in MPG just by using your car's cruise control.
Also, resist the impulse to drive like a maniac, like constantly slamming on your brakes or quickly accelerating. All that does is burn up valuable fuel and waste your dollars. The same goes for excessive idling. If you have a long wait at a drive through, or at the bank, shut your car down. Cutting back on unnecessary idling has been shown to improve gas mileage by as much as 19%. That is a pretty darn big savings if you think about it, just for remembering to do something simple like shut your car down instead of idling.
There are many simple ways to improve gas mileage, and not enough time to cover them all at once! But remember, if you implement even one of these methods you will save money.
Gas Mileage For Cars
There are many times when a person will find themselves wondering how they can improve their gas mileage and even though there isn't really anything anyone can do about the gas prices there is something that you can do to get better fuel efficiency. You can trade whatever car you have now in for a better car that's gets better mpg. I would consider getting a 4 cylinder for the high prices that we have today. Even though I would rather drive a small pickup the little cars that are around today are getting great gas mileage and that's even better if the car is turbocharged.
I have heard that if you get your oil changed it will give you better gas mileage but that's only getting changed every 3 months or every 3000 miles. So to me that wouldn't really be saving any gas because it doesn't sound like oil and can save you gas mileage. The thing that I would think would save gas mileage is what they tested on Myth Busters and that is less than 45mph you should ride with your windows down and the a/c off but if you are going over 45mph and creating drag then you should have the windows rolled up and the a/c on. That's just what they tested and it proved to save way more gas up to over 30 miles with the a/c on over 45mph.
Your tires need to also be at the right pressure or they will be causing you to lose gas mileage as well. When your tires are not to the right tire pressure then they will have to work harder to grip the ground to get the car moving. So if your tires are at the perfect pressure then you will not be forcing your tires to move so hard and they will move easier making the gas mileage better in a way. You would be getting better with perfect pressure then when you never check your tire pressure is what the point is.
You should not keep a lot of stuff in your trunk because more weight equals more drag so you will be getting less mpg. So you might want to clean your car out of all the garbage, trash and other things not needed so your car will produce better gas mileage.
You should never turn off the car if you are just going in a store for a split second or less because your car will get better gas mileage if the car is already warm where as it is cold. So just keeps the car running if you are just going into the post office for a minute.
