Some members of this large group consider being a member of the baby boomer generation while others may consider it a not-so-friendly gathering of folks. Following World War II when the country began to realize an unprecedented economic boom, many couple decided the time was right to have children and from 1946 t0 1964, that is just what they did.
The first of the baby boomers are rapidly staring retirement in the eye, but many of them are not quite ready to give up and be confined to a rocking chair. Their traditional work cycle may becoming to an end, but many are not ready to stop being active and settle into a sedimentary lifestyle. They want to go places and do things that they have waited their whole life to do.
Many medical issues of their parents may still be present such as high blood pressure, diabetes and arthritis but advances in medical technology means they do not have to be chained to their medicine cabinet with their doctor's name on speed dial. For the most part, today's baby boomers are healthier, stronger and more willing to keep on going when the world around them tells them it's time to hang up their hat. Many do and then turn around and put on another hat.
Whether it's a sailing hat for their leisurely cruise, a golf hat for their afternoon outings or a hat ushering in a new career path, it is understood that despite what the calendar may say, they are not ready to give up and become complacent with their lives.
They have lived through many events during their lifetime and hold many memories, good and bad, about what they believe the world should be. Very few baby boomers have an entitlement mentality and spent their lives working for everything they have. Now that they may be able to stop working, they want to be able to enjoy their freedom. They have children, grandchildren and in some instances a few great-grandchildren they are looking forward to watch grow up.
Most baby boomer's want their children to fare better than they did and they want more for their grandchildren. The hold vast experience from everything they have gone through from wars to shortages of food and gasoline. They have watched a man walk on the moon and embrace many new technologies such as the internet. They expect more out of life and are willing to do what it takes to achieve their goals.
Unfortunately, many baby boomers realized too late that everything their parents told them about saving for retirement were ignored. Many will not have enough money socked away to enjoy their later years and will seek employment to help fund medical expenses and pay any rising costs of utilities and transportation costs. However, they have the tenacity to stick with it and do whatever it takes to make it happen.
There are some that consider members of the baby boomer generation as being out of touch with the world around them, but considering they played many key roles in the formation of that world, they understand its shortcomings better than anyone else.
