Healthy eating for children should be treated as top priority by all parents because as a parent we all have a responsibility to give our children the best possible start in life. Feeding them a healthy diet when young helps them to grow into fit adults who suffer from fewer ailments and can look forward to longevity. Is there any parent who doesn't wish this for their children?
The obvious question now is what constitutes and good diet for children? I will give a link to a very good website at the end of this article that will deal with all the technical aspects of a healthy diet. For now accept that the food pyramid that was instigated by the US Department of Agriculture is a very good starting point.
I know that everybody has a problem in persuading children to eat what is healthy rather than what is fun; the secret is to make healthy food fun too. For instance I recently watched a British made TV program that subjected an obese family to eight weeks under the control of a dietician. Initially the children claimed that they would only eat burgers – meaning McDonalds. The dietician made 50 lentil burgers for the cost of buying three Big Macs and presented three lentil burgers to the three children for dinner, freezing the remaining 47 for use later. The only thing she told them was that she insisted that burger buns be replaced with whole grain rolls. Result: The children ate the lentil burgers without comment. Not only did they eat them they asked for more. OK, more can be bad too but the point is what they really wanted to eat was something that resembled a Big Mac, what it tasted like wasn't that important.
Now here is the BIG point: When the dietician told the mother what she was about to do to encourage her children to eat healthy foods the mother's response was. ‘You have no chance, my children will insist upon eating McDonalds.' - I think this is a case of a mother who thought she was being kind to her children by giving them what they wanted; so much so that she actually started believing it herself.
The family spent 80 pounds sterling each week on take home food and their grocery bill was 140 pounds sterling each week. When the healthy diet was started the weekly grocery bill dropped to 85 pounds sterling each week and zero on take-out food. A total weekly saving 135 pounds sterling each week (That equates to around US$240 each week.) just by cutting out unhealthy convenience foods.
At the end of eight weeks the mother had lost 21 pounds, the father 18 pounds and each child 14 pounds. For the first time in their young lives the children were playing team sports at school and with friends after school.
We are what we eat and healthy eating for children is the greatest gift you can give to your offspring.

Healthy eating meant for children unfortunately misses the target sometimes.
As a parent, you may have done all forms of bribery, persuasion, warning or manipulation to your child just to make them eat healthy food. But wouldn't it be nicer if we did not have to resort to such tactics?
There are seven quick tips to help you succeed with healthy eating.
1. Start the ball rolling while they are young. The younger they are, the easier it can be. Do not wait for the time when their taste buds get ruined by sweet treats. By this time, it can be harder to convince them to eat Brussels sprouts and broccoli. If you failed to do it while they were much younger, you can use tip # 4 ? be tough ? and prepare for a negative reaction that you may get from your kids.
2. Store a variety of healthy foods. It keeps them from being attached to a single food or food group. Yes they can have their own favorites, but presenting them with a variety can help convince them to like other food tastes. A piece of warning though, unhealthy food stocked in the house is definitely not included in the plan. Junk foods have to be banned.
3. Blend the foods that they like with the food they hate. Here is how you do it: stir fry onions with zucchini, broccoli, carrots and snow peas rather than giving them only a platter of steamed broccoli. To make sure that your child gets some carrots with his or her zucchini, you should slice it into small pieces.
4. Be fervent! If you cannot impose firm-love, your plan will fail. You will need to inform your child that this is what you cooked for dinner and that is it. There is no other available food. If you only have healthy food in your home, it can work. Since there are no other options and they get hungry, they have no other choice but to eat what you served.
5. Prevent your kids from entertaining people who will only sabotage your plan. There are just evil people who want to prove that they can succeed luring your child into eating sweets. You may even be amazed that even doctors and dentists do such a thing. Teach your kid the proper way to say "No thank you". If you have this problem with a relative, tell them bluntly that you will stop visiting them unless they stop.
6. Restrict your child from watching TV commercials. Yes, commercials. These commercials are the source for nutritional education of 95% of the populace. Whenever children watch kiddie shows, they get to see junk foods being advertised as delicious food to eat and it can affect their craving for the right food.
7. Be a good model. This is apparently the most important tip. Do not expect your child to give up on candy and ice cream if you can't do it yourself. Convince them to eat fish, vegetables and whole grains by showing them that you are eating it as well. At an early age, you will be their role model, so might as well be a good one.
If you were not a good role model, you definitely have no right to criticize your child's poor eating habits, obesity, ADHD and when your child gets sick, you will need to take a lot of time off from work.
