Hearing Aids - Know How It Works.

    View:
It is known that hearing aids have been in existence for decades, and it is also known that the first devices used to hear were simple cone shaped devices held up to your ear so that a person could speak in to them. The benefit of these devices would be that the funnel would amplify the sound into your ear. Anyone can tell you that our current hearing devices take advantage of much greater technology, but many do not realize just how that technology works.

The way that hearing aids work is by increasing the small sounds outside the ear with the help of tiny microphones inside the aids. The first step is that those devices alter the sound currents into an electrical or digital signal. The exact settings for the microphones will depend upon the degree of a person's hearing loss and their typical environment.

Environment here refers to how much and what kind of noise you are usually around. A person who needs to hear high frequency noises will need to have a different setting than a person who is constantly exposed to a conversational environment, for example. These different factors will help your audiologist adjust the settings on your device but this is only part of the answer as to how they work.

The technology that receives and converts the signals in hearing aids come in three basic types. The least expensive type is also the least advanced, which is is the analog adjustable. Comfort, volume, and any other specifications can easily be adjusted by the wearer's audiologist with this type of technology. The piece will be constructed in a factory based on custom designs, and the volume control will be adjusted either manually or automatically.

A Hearing aid will also include a type of circuitry known as the analog programmable. These are somewhat better than the analog adjustable because they can be programmed using a computer. It is programmed by the audiologist: he or she will program in various types of sound capture and transmission possibilities.

The programs can be selected at any point by the user with a provided remote control. Digital programmable devices are the most advanced and, of course, the most expensive. In the beginning, after finally getting the design correct, the devices were far too large to begin to be practical but this problem has since been corrected.

These digital hearing aids use DSP - Digital Sound Processing - to work. A computer chip analyzes and will process the sound before the amplification process begins in the ear. This is used to give them the correct settings. At this point, the data is changed back into sound, as it gets sent through the ear. The digital models also have the capability of detecting and eliminating feedback by identifying the frequencies which work automatically with little adjustment from the wearer.

Hearing aids are one of the many items that have seen an incredible increase in a short amount of time. For those that need assistance in hearing, there are many more options available than there were a few short years ago. Without all the advancements in technology, hearing aids might not work the way that they do.
