Juanpu River separates Shanghai into two parts - Pudun to the east and Pusi to the west. Now Shanghai is Asia's largest financial and economic centre, a metropolis with luxury hotels, refined restaurants, good shopping centers. Contemporary Shanghai is a city of skyscrapers, banks, entertainment centers and big international fairs.

In first on the area of the present Shanghai there was a small fishing village, but on August 19th, 1291 it received County status. Now this date is considered to be the day of Shanghai founding.

By XVI century Shanghai became one of the most significant producers of textile in China. To protect Shanghai from the Japanese pirates in 1553 a fortress was raised. For a long time China was a very isolated country, but in XIX century Shanghai opened its port to the foreigners. English, Americn and French sailors were the first to land in Shanghai. Three concessions were established, but several years later English and American concessions were united. According to Nankin agreement foreigners had right to buy real estate, to trade and (since 1895) create industrial enterprises. Thus Shanghai became the richest colonial territory. Now Shanghai is a part of the independent China, but one of the most liberal parts.

Among the most visited Shanghai attractions are Oriental Pearl TV Tower, Shanghai Museum, Shanghai Grand Theatre, Shanghai Xintiandi, The Bund, Huang Pu River, Nanjing Road, Yu Gardens, People's Square, Frenchtown, Jade Buddha Temple, Longhua Temple and Pagoda, Grand View Garden (Daguan Yuan) and Zhouszhuang Town.

Oriental Pearl TV Tower is the tallest Asian tower and the third tallest in the world. Its height is 468 meters. It was built in 1994 and although such a short period of time has passed, it has become the symbol of the modern Shanghai.

The building of Shanghai Museum has a shape of urn and possesses 11 galleries. The museum was created in 1952 on the place of the former hippodrome. Its construction was partly financed by the Chinese, living in the United States. The museum exhibits art objects, porcelain, ceramics.

Jade Buddha Temple was founded in 1882. Several decades later it was burnt. In 1918 its restoration began. It lasted for 10 years. The temple is not very big, but still looks monumental.

Yu Gardens are located in the old Chinese district and otherwise called Yuyuan Shangchang. The park was created in 1559-1577 for the rich local official. It's a classic park for the southern China where creators tried to embody all the diversity of Chinese nature. It's a very popular place for walks and is always overcrowded.
Hong Kong Tourist Information
Sitges is an attractive seaside town on the Costa Dorada, about 25 miles (40km) to the south-west of Barcelona. The resort has a lot to offer including an attractive old town, several good beaches, art museums and famous festivals. Sitges first became fashionable in the late 19th century when writers and artists were attracted to what was then a picturesque little fishing village.

There are a couple of excellent art museums in the town. The Museu Cau Ferrat is housed within a couple of fisherman's cottages which were once home to artist Santiago Rusinol. Opened in 1932, the museum displays paintings and ceramics by the likes of Pablo Picasso, El Greco and Rusinol himself. The Museu Marciel houses a collection of statues, paintings, ceramics and furniture which was assembled by American collector Charles Deering. The collection is housed within a former hospital which dates back to the 14th century. Another of Sitges' museums is the Museu Romantic, which occupies the 18th century home of the wealthy Falc and Llopis families. Inside is a fine collection of period furniture and antique dolls.

In the centre of Sitges is the old quarter which dates from medieval times. The area is characterised by narrow cobblestone streets and old fishermens cottages with terracotta roofs. Sights include the Baroque-style church and remains of the medieval ramparts.

Sitges has 17 beaches in total, with many of them situated close to the town centre. One of the most popular beaches, especially with young people, is Playa de la Ribera close to the church of Sant Bartomeu. Quieter beaches can be found further to the west, some of which are frequented by naturists. The most popular family beaches in Sitges are Playa de la Fragata, San Sebastian and Playa de los Barcos, all of which have shallow water making them suitable for young children. San Sebastian is especially attractive as it is backed by palm trees, cafes and elegant 1920's apartments.

Sitges is renowned for its lively and colourful festivals, with many of them taking place throughout the period of Lent. The most famous fiesta is the Sitges Gay Carnival in late January and early February, the highlight being the grand parade. Sitges has long had a reputation as being open-minded and bohemian, so it's no surprise the resort is a popular gay destination. The town has several gay bars and discos, and the beach of Playa de las Balmins is popular with gay naturists.

Another important event in Sitges is the Catalan Film Festival which takes place in the autumn.

Sitges has an attractive seafront esplanade, best enjoyed during the evening when you can relax in one of the cafe-bars and watch the world go by. The town has many excellent Spanish restaurants offering sea food, paella and other traditional dishes.

The nearest airport to Sitges is at Barcelona. MonBus operate a bus service from the airport to Sitges, and there is also a train service although you have to change at Barcelona's Sants station.
