Enema is widely used for cleansing the bowel by rectal irrigation. Usually lukewarm water is used for this purpose. It is done early in the morning on an empty stomach. The patient is made to lie down on his back with his leg stretched and right leg bent on his abdomen. He should be in relaxing mood. Before administering enema, the enema nozzle is to be lubricated either with oil or Vaseline and inserted into the rectum. About one to two liters are injected into rectum, after that either he must lie down or walk a little distance. After 5 to 10 minutes the morbid material will be thrown out along with water.



A cold water bath enema is good in inflammation conditions diarrhea dysentery, ulcerative colitis, piles and fever. Hot water enema is beneficial in hemorrhoids with pain, rectal inflammation and in leucorrhoea. The enema clears and cleanses the gut and stimulates peristalsis and relieves constipation. In acute diseases, it should be taken daily for 2-3 days. In chronic diseases, daily enemas may be necessary for a week or even longer.

Enema has no side effects. People who take sufficient amount of fiber rich diet including fruits and vegetables, or those who exercise regularly, rarely need enemas.
