There are some people who are born with the ability to recall everything they see, not matter what it is after the first time they see it and be able to recall it perfectly. However, most people are not born with this type of ability. There is however, ways that you can develop a photographic memory even if you were not born with one.
Of course, a photographic memory can mean that you simply "see" a photographic image in your minds of view of information, such as a "snapshot" of a book's page. For many, though, "photographic memory" does not have to mean just that.
True photographic capabilities when it comes to memory may be confused with eidetic memory. Eidetic memory is the ability to view an image, then at a later time recall the image in perfect detail. This ability is highly debated as to its existence. However, it is possible to be able to develop memory to the point of near perfect recall.
There have been numerous tricks developed to help people improve their memory skills, helping to develop a photographic memory, which can be useful if school, in business or just in remembering the birthdays of everyone in the family, including distant relatives that are rarely seen.
Different Strokes for Different Folks
Primarily, school study habits are based on repetition and association. Students are taught that by using words or numbers they can easily recall anything that they have learned.
Photographic memory of specific phrases can be developed. For instance, placing them into a story or song, doing this allows the information to be quickly recalled no matter what it is.
Numbers can be much more difficult to remember, but with this, too, you can develop a "photographic memory" by learning certain ways. You don't necessarily have to have a picture of the numbers in your mind, but you can relate these numbers to phraseology or something similar that will help you recall those numbers in order, such as in a list.
Despite numerous studies, the entire concept of eidetic or photographic memory is still under debate. The studies have shown however that an individual can expand the ability of their memory and the speed with which they can recall information, and that it is possible to do this with the same techniques that are used to develop photographic memory. In order to promote memory it is best to learn the type of learning method that works best for you when it comes to studying. Once this is achieved, maintaining memory and recall are greatly increased.
