DNA analysis can be used to pinpoint an individual at the scene of a crime. This is particularly simple in rape cases because semen contains sperm cells that contain the male DNA. Find the DNA match and you have found the rapist. All cells contain DNA though, including skin and hair cells. We drop skin and hair cells everywhere we go, so all the crime scene technician does is to collect these from a murder, arson or burglary crime scene and find the DNA profile of the criminal.

DNA analysis can be used to prove or disprove paternity. This is commonly used in cases where the mother is trying to claim maintenance payments from an absent father.

Where people were adopted as infants and are looking for their natural parents DNA analysis can also be used.

Your birth parents do not need to have registered to get a result. If any person related to you is in the database, a positive result will show. You may find grandparents, siblings or more distant relatives, all of which will lead to more information on your heritage.

How To Find Relatives

The advantage to finding lost relatives versus finding anyone else on the Web, is that you probably have a lot more information about your relatives to aid you in your search. To start out, put their name into Google and see what that gives. Sometimes, the most obvious and simplest way works best. Be sure to surround the name in quotes so you search only for the whole name and not for 1st and last names separately. Often the simplest and most obvious way will work best.

Next you can try narrowing the search by adding a state, city, or other identifier. Anything you know about them might be useful: maiden or married names, parent's names, profession, spouse's name, and so forth These can narrow the results some.

You can also try to just search for their name on MySpace and Facebook. It is amazing how many people have accounts there. A phone directory like WhitePages.com might also work, provided you at least know what state they live in.

If you know the high school they graduated from, you could try searching for them on classmates.com or reunion.com and see if you can find them that way.

The phone, of course, is the old standby. Call mutual relatives and see if they are in touch with the person you're searching for. Often this family network can expand on its own without your help, since the relative you contact who does not know might ask another who does, who asks another, and so on. Many times, this calling nets you lots of new family contacts and even information on when reunions you might not have known about are being held. Getting back into the family loop can be a rewarding thing on its own, whether you find your lost family member or not!
