You need to work out the size of the hole that you want to repair as different sizes of holes require different methods of repair. If it's a very small hole then simply patching it with some compound is enough. When it has dried then you should sand back the spot for an even finish.
If the hole you want to repair is a bit bigger, perhaps as big as a light switch box then you should fill the hole with some newspaper before you apply the compound. This means that you don't need to use as much compound.
For holes that are around 30cmx30cm you should use hot patching. This means that you fill the hole with some drywall.
For very large holes, like the size of your in your wall you will need to treat them as new areas that need recovering. Start by removing any nails and screws that are sticking up through the plasterboard. Cut a new piece of dry walling and secure it into place, then tape and finish as normal.
So first thing to do is to measure the hole and then see what method is suitable.
2. Preparation
When you've found the right technique to fix your hole then you need to make sure you have everything you need in order to fix it. You will need some specific supplies in order to complete the project. When the compound is mixed you need to work quite quickly so that you don't risk it drying too quickly.
If you are filling a large hole then make sure that the drywall is already cut to shape before you mix the compound. Make sure you double check any measurements so that everything is correct.
3. Don't Over Spackle
If you have a large hole then simply applying compound isn't good enough because there's nothing for the compound to stick to. This patch will almost certainly crack or fall out in the near future. You should apply as little compound as possible and make sure it is smooth and even. Applying too much compound means that you will have a long time sanding down the excess!
4. Be patient
When you are trying to complete any project then you need to be patient as it won't all be possible over night. If you try to sand the compound before it is completely dry then you will make a lot of mess and you might have to start again from the beginning. You need to consider that you need some time to relax, you can't spend all of your time on these projects.
5. Sanding and Finishing
The compound might look like its smooth, but it's not. You need to sand it the best you possibly can. There might be very small bumps which you don't notice. Sand down the area so that the wall is completely smooth before painting.
How To Repair A Hole In The Wall
When the idea of withdrawing money from a machine, rather than a human bank clerk, was first introduced, it was completely alien to the average man in the street. Up until then, you could only get your hands on your money by going inside a bank during their (notoriously short) opening hours, waiting in the often long queues, and requesting to withdraw money from a bank employee.
British bank Barclays are credited with being the first to install a cash machine some 40 years ago, in their Enfield branch in North London. It was a move which was to revolutionise the way people could get their hands on their money. By the end of the 1960s, there were 781 cash machines across the world, 595 of which where in the UK. Cash machines have since become extremely widespread, with over 1.64 million now in existence worldwide.
The inventor of the cash machine, which is also known as the ATM (Automatic Teller Machine), John Shepherd-Barron, recalls his inspiration for creating the life changing technology:
"I remember back in 1965 that I would always take money out of my bank on a Saturday morning. However, one Saturday I was one minute late at my bank and it was closed. I had to ask my local garage to cash my cheque. That night I started thinking that there must be a better way to get cash when I wanted it. I thought of the chocolate vending machine where money was put in a slot and a bar dispatched ? surely money could be dispensed in the same way? Within two years my idea had become reality".
Since Shepherd-Barron's pioneering invention, cash machines have come a long way. Perhaps not surprisingly, in Japan, a nation well known for its love of technology and vending machines, the ATM is sufficiently advanced to allow not just withdrawals, but deposits of cash (both notes and coins), transfers and the payment of bills. However, despite the high-tech nature of these machines, rather than offering a 24-hour service like in most other countries of the world, Japanese ATMs close at night!
ATMs have since spread from being found only at banks to being found in airports, train stations, and nowadays even shops and pubs. With security an ever increasing concern, banks are looking at ways to decrease the chance of fraudulent withdrawals. Technology such as retina scanning, fingerprinting, voice recognition, even DNA sampling could all become incorporated into cash machines of the future.
Cash machines are now a vital part of the everyday life, allowing customers more widespread access to their bank accounts than ever before.
