To enjoy a fun and safe camping trip, it is important that one is aware of their surroundings -- always. Maps of the campsite should be provided and campers should be knowledgeable in reading the map to avoid problems. Certain plants and animals can become a problem and endanger a camper if they get too close. It is also crucial that campers pay attention to what they eat and drink.
Campers should plan what they are going to eat and drink the entire camping trip. Bring portable food like trail mix, granola bars, peanut butter and fruits. Also, bring dehydrated meals and just add water on camp. Never pick up wild berries unless someone has a clear understanding of what they are doing. These tips not only eliminate poisoning and eating food that will upset your stomach, it will also help in budgeting for food and storage. Remember, a camping bag can only bring limited things, so it is better to use the space wisely rather than waste it on unnecessary food.
Streams and creeks may be contaminated by parasites which can cause nausea, gas, bloating, stomach cramps and diarrhea. Do not drink from any wilderness water sources. Bring bottled water or buy iodine tablets to purify wilderness water. Boiling water is okay; though it does take time and energy. Plus it is rather difficult to determine the appropriate boiling time; boiling points may change due to elevation.
Do not to touch plants that are not familiar. Campers should dress in pants and long-sleeved shirts to protect them from accidentally touching poisonous plants. Campers should buy products that they can apply before they hike to act as a protection to irritating plant oils. However, if a camper does touch one of these poisonous plants, wash immediately the contacted area with soap and water. Take antihistamines to combat the blistering and rashes associated with poisonous plants.
Insects can a big problem. Put citronella-based products on clothing whenever possible. Do not use for the skin. Use insect repellents with no more than 30% DEET for the skin. Make sure to follow the directions and do not use on a child under the age of 2. Allergic reaction or rash from a bee, mosquitos bite or wasp sting can be relieved by taking antihistamines.
A big concern when in campsite is the tick. They carry other infections ? check everyone for ticks. They like to hide behind the ears, in the hair, in the groin area and under the arms. Be aware of a rash which is a red ring, 2 inches in diameter and appears around the bite days after infection ? this is a clear indication of Lyme Disease.
Never feed them wild animals, no matter how hungry they look. Do not attract animals to your campsite. Pack food in resealable bags to prevent the smell of food from attracting wild animals. It does not matter what continent you are on, when camping, always research on the area and the probable problems one may encounter. Ask experience campers for campsite guides. And lastly, think of camping as a vacation and enjoy Mother Nature at its finest.
