Resources for learner drivers and driving schools are widely available. There are two main sources, the local transport authority as well as the internet. Information can be accessed from both categories easily on safe driving. Catalogues and booklets offering resources are available both at the local transport authority office and on the internet. Some of these resources are also available for free. A fully developed guide for learner drivers and driving schools comes at a price.
The 'Driver's Record', brought out by Driving Standards Agency, will be of great assistance. This catalogue offers tips to driving schools to train learner drivers is a must. Every driving school should have a copy of this catalogue. Every approved driving instructor should necessarily keep this catalogue in the vehicle while training learner drivers.
The first and foremost tip is to drive safe. The learner has to be at least 17 years old to qualify for training. Some of the most important instructions to be followed by the learner driver are: the learner driver should possess a valid provisional driver license; obtain insurance to drive the vehicle; meet the vision (eye sight) standards; drive vehicles that display the board L (this is to caution other drivers that this particular car is being driven by a learner).
It is easy to obtain a provisional driver license. All learner drivers should possess a provisional driver license. Only people, who are 17-years-old, will be granted the provisional driver license. A provisional driver license holder should drive a vehicle bearing the board (L) only on the roads. They are not permitted to drive on speedways or motorways.
After obtaining a provisional driving license, contact the nearest approved driving training schools, which employ certified driving instructors with sufficient experience. It is easy to locate such driving training schools since they are registered on the internet and in the yellow pages. They also advertise their services in the neighborhood. After ascertaining the credibility of the driving training school, register yourself for the training session.
There is no fixed training duration for training drivers. It depends on each individual's learning and grasping skills. Ideally, every learner driver should undergo training for not less than 15 hours over two weeks. However some research has found that a total of 50 hours are required for a trainer driver to completely undergo all categories of training to become eligible to drive on freeways.
Once the learner driver completes the training, a test has to be cleared to obtain a driver's license. The test includes both theoretical test and practical test to ascertain the expertise of the driver.
Insurance For Learner Drivers
Before you start to drive, you must:
Hold a valid, provisional driving license for Great Britain or Northern Ireland
Make sure that any vehicle you drive is roadworthy and properly taxed and insured
It is important to learn safe driving practice from the beginning of your driving career because bad habits are hard to break.
It is unlikely that anyone except an approved driving instructor (ADI) would have the experience, knowledge and training to teach you properly. Learning safe driving habits from the start will improve the safety of yourself and other road users.
If you want to practice your driving with an accompanying driver, the accompanying driver must be over the age of 21 and must have held (and still hold) a full license for three years.
As a learner driver you must display 'L' plates ('L' or 'D' plates in Wales) in a conspicuous position on the front and rear of the vehicle you are driving.
Minimum age you can take a test
You can take your theory test once your provisional license becomes valid.
Normally, for car drivers, the earliest date your provisional license can become valid is your 17th birthday, however you can apply for the license up to three months before your 17th birthday.
So, if you apply for your provisional license before you are 17 you will still have to wait until your birthday before you can take your theory test.
Disability living allowance
If you are receiving disability living allowance at the higher rate your provisional licence will come into effect when you are 16, but you can apply for it within
three months of your 16th birthday.
Motorcyclists Direct access scheme
Direct access is a scheme which allows a person over the age of 21 to avoid the two year/25 kW restriction by taking a test on a machine of at least 35 kW (46.6 bhp). A pass allows you to ride any size of bike. Any instruction given on a machine that exceeds the normal learner motorcycle specification must be supervised at all times by a certified motorcycle instructor who should be in radio contact. You should also wear fluorescent or reflective clothing and follow all other provisional license restrictions.
Accelerated access
Riders who reach the age of 21, while still within the two year period where they are restricted to maximum 25 kW (33 bhp) machines, but who wish to ride larger bikes need to pass a further test on a motorcycle of at least 35 kW ( 46.6 bhp). They may practice on bikes over 25 kW (33 bhp) under the same practice conditions for direct access riders. You will revert to learner status while practicing (on a motorcycle greater than 25 kW (33 bhp) although test failure will not affect your existing license.
Mopeds and tractors
If you want to ride a moped you can take your theory test when you are 16, but again you must make sure you have a valid provisional license.
If you are 16 and already have a provisional license for an agricultural vehicle or a moped, this will give you provisional entitlement to drive car when you are 17.
