Internet marketing is perhaps the most competitive form of marketing today. Unlike regular marketing activities, internet marketing requires more than just placing a few banners and a couple of Google adword ads. Internet marketing has evolved into a specialized field of marketing and involves a wide array of activities like search engine optimization, search engine marketing and other marketing techniques. Most internet marketing firms usually offer a complete internet marketing package in addition to specialised services. If you are looking for a firm that can market your website or product here are a few tips to help you choose an internet marketing firm.
The first thing you should do is look for a marketing firm that can offer you a complete range of services. Most internet marketing firms usually have tie ups with different companies so that they can offer a complete list of services. Make sure that the internet marketing firm you hire is capable of offering everything from creative content creation for search engine optimization, to banner design and the latest in SEO: XHTML splicing. In a nutshell, make sure that you end up dealing with a single company instead of a host of different companies.
Another thing to look at is an internet marketing firm's past work. Most internet marketing firms have a comprehensive portfolio online, and you can browse through a list of the various clients they have worked for. Chances are that if you choose a well known and established internet marketing firm you will have no trouble with your site, and your site's popularity will probably stay constant. In all probability you will end up having your website search engine optimized, search engine optimization is now an essential part of all internet marketing campaigns. Make sure that your site has been designed with search engine optimization in mind.
Another thing to remember is that search engine optimization is far from an exact science and different internet marketing firms have different opinions on how to search engine optimize a site. If this is the case make sure that there is no ?black hat? search engine optimization technique involved. Your site might show good performance at first but chances are that search engines will eventually catch on and your site can be banned as a result of improper search engine optimization techniques.
There is no substitute for experience when it comes to internet marketing, many internet marketing firms usually have a set plan that they follow when it comes to marketing particular products or sites. If you are looking for an internet marketing firm make sure that the firm you are planning on hiring has considerable experience and has actually worked on a site like yours. For example, if you are planning on promoting a new social networking site, try and hire an internet marketing firm that has worked with a social networking site in the past. Also if you are planning to market an already established product, then look for a company that has worked on marketing a similar product in the past. Remember there is no substitute for experience when it comes to marketing.
If you are looking to market a product and not a website, then you should make sure that the internet marketing firm that you are dealing with has considerable experience with auction sites like eBay and also know of the latest developments in online marketing like Google Base. In the end an ideal internet marketing firm should be jack and master of all. It might sound like a difficult or unreasonable demand but the truth is that internet marketing has so many different aspects to it that a company lacking in any single aspect can adversely affect your sites popularity and may end up doing more damage then good in the long run. Therefore, a little bit of research never hurts in the long run.
Internet Marketing Research Firm
If you want to be successful with Internet Marketing then you need to begin with the end in mind. Far too often would be marketeers have a 'build it and they will come' attitude. Sadly, many times 'they' don't come and those 'would be's' end up being forever 'wannabe's'. Let's not make the same mistake. That is why any Internet Marketing campaign should begin with proper research. The good news is that there are plenty of tools available.
You also need to think about building different web sites for different markets. Even if your market is quite defined, you will find that there are various niches within that market. So, think about building a web-site for each and every niche you identify. The reason for this is quite simple.
Let's say for example you used one piece of software to rapidly build SIMILAR sites in the SAME market. You might achieve some short term success but what happens when Google bans that piece of software or our target market becomes overcrowded or even worse, dead? You get the idea, that is why you need to diversify.
Ideally, I would like you to choose a target market from Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs. Also, go with your first instinct, something you're interested in or an area where you think there is potential. Just to whet your appetite, these are the average fees paid PER CLICK by the top advertisers for the following keywords:
Cheap flight $ 4.00 Credit Card $ 15.45 Holiday $ 15.53 Mobile ring tone $ 5.15 Smoked fish $ 0.20 Vegetable delivery $ 0.05

There are many sites where you can find the top paying keywords but I suggest you do not go down that route and follow the 'road less travelled'.
One other important point:
When a surfer uses 1 to 2 words they are generally just doing research i.e. gifts. When they use 2, 3 or more words the surfer is generally looking to buy something i.e. traditional anniversary gift.
So ideally, you should be looking for business segments that you can wrap up in two or three words i.e.
www.your-example-site.com.
Note and one big long word of caution,
you do not want to make the domain name too long
Because this will get ridiculous when we start to add sub-domains further down the track i.e.
now what we have is a really long domain name we don't want to make the domain name too long
In summary, there is an old wood chopping saying that goes something along the lines of:
If I am going to spend 8 hours chopping down a tree, I am going to make sure that 7 of those hours are spent sharpening the axe.
With Internet Marketing it is no different, market research is your vital and must do first step of any internet marketing campaign.
