Though Joan Jett tickets at http://www.stubhub.com/joan-jett-tickets still secure some mega bucks, the real story behind this feminine rocker is from her days with the chick group The Runaways, which is exactly what Hollywood plans on materializing in their new film. Set to play the veteran singer is Twilight superstar Kristen Stewart, who joined the Floria Sigismondi directed project that is set to begin sometime in 2009 after Stewart finishes filming the second, but not final installment in the Twilight series, Blue Moon.
Clad in leather and serious liquid eye liner, the rocker has been the one leading female figure in rock and roll since her classic hit “I Love Rock ‘n Roll,” remaining an influencing figure on the genre for generations. Her first group was The Runaways, an all girl rock group that also included Lita Ford, drummer Sandy West, singer/keyboardist Cherie Currie and bassist Jackie Fox. The film plans on following the lives of Jett and Currie as they rise (and subsequently fall) into stardom as rocking teens.
Though everyone knows that Jett doesn't care about her “bad reputation,” she's set as producer of the production. The Runaways paved the way for the classic feminine punk rock movement and without them there wouldn't be Blondie, Yeah Yeah Yeas, the Go-Go's, Garbage, Hole or even Paramore. So before fans flock to the theater to check out the latest Stewart creation, it might be wise to educate oneself on of the most successful all-girl rock bands of our time.
Though the group didn't have as prolific a career as those who have followed in their footsteps, their sound has changed the world of rock. The Runaways began when they were just teens in the mid ‘70s when other girlie groups were crooning folk songs about falling in love and marrying their sweethearts. The Runaways took the rock world by storm with their singles that raged about being bad – everything from sex, drugs and digging the wrong guys. And while today the group has seen success unlike most would ever have conceived, they fell apart not only because of poor sales but internal disagreement. While the group came together on their own, Svengali Kim Fowley often pegged the rockers as his own creation, which led to a messy break.
After only four years together the group will be immortalized in a Hollywood version vise-a-vie their squabbling, guitars and leather. And with the help of front woman Jett, their music and their ideals are going to be viewed by hundreds of millions around the world. Still rocking today, Jett has become a picturesque image of what female rockers should be. Since The Runaways, Jett has remained in the rock scene with her solo album release, Bad Reputation, in 1980 followed by the group the Blackhearts and the album I Love Rock-n-Roll. The album, released with her Blackhearts members whom included guitarist Ricky Byrd, bassist Gary Ryan and drummer Lee Crystal, was her most promising album and sent her to the Top Ten. Since then, the riot grrrl punk rocker has continued to dominate the stage with her loud presence and domineering personality.
