Learn To Dance Salsa

    View:
The salsa has an eight beat pattern that is made up of two bars of four beats. The Salsa music is usually complicated and fast with around 180 beats per minute. The salsa pattern is generally one of three steps and then a skipped step or a tap on the fourth beat.

The basic step is as follows: On counts 1, 2, and 3 the leader steps forward, then you replace the weight to your previous support foot keeping it in place, and then step backward. On counts 5, 6, and 7 you step backwards, then you replace the weight to your previous support foot keeping it in place, and then step forward again.

The follower does exactly the same steps but in the reverse order. The basic step is the basis for many of the other salsa patterns.

Some of the breaks to the basic step are:

1. Side Break ? You start from either foot and step sideways; then you replace the weight to your previous support foot, keeping it in place.

2. Back Break - You start from either foot and step backwards; then you replace the weight to your previous support foot, keeping it in place.

3. Forward Break - You start from either foot and step forward; then you replace the weight to your previous support foot, keeping it in place.

There are many different salsa styles that involve different timing of the steps or different patterns as you move across the dance floor. Combine style with attitude and personal add ins and you get quite the salsa show!

The Cuban style can be danced as a contratiempo or on-one. With the Cuban Salsa, on counts 1, 2, and 3 a backward basic occurs while on counts 5, 6, and 7 a forward basic happens. The follower mirrors the leader's movements. It is common practice with the Cuban to have the leader and follower circle each other regularly.

The Dile que no or cross body lead is also essential to the Cuban. This is the most complex of moves and is not designed for beginners. However, once you master it, it can be used in the Rueda, Cuban Casino, and Wheel Dance.

In Latin American countries the Columbian style is the most common. Here the leader and follower do their moves standing in one place. Most of the moves are based off the Cuban style with the main difference being lack of space involved. It's a very sexy version to watch!

The LA style is a derivative of the Cuban style with the addition of the cross body lead. The leader steps forward on 1, on 2 and 3 it's a step to the right while turning 90 degrees to face to the left. The follower then steps forward on 5 and 6, then on 7 and 8 turns while the leader is making the 90 degree turn. By the 8 count the leader and follower are in opposite positions. The Los Angeles is the flashiest form of Salsa dancing.

That's just a few of the most common styles. Of course there are plenty others, and then there's always the creative element that comes into play.

Learning the Salsa from an article can be a bit overwhelming, but if you really want to learn it check into either local dance classes or online dance lessons. You'll be Salsa dancing like a pro in no time!
Learn To Dance Salsa
Salsa is a vibrant, stylish, and fun dance, which could be a passion that will last for a lifetime. It could also bee seen as a demanding sport that requires endurance, good breathing, fast feet and the needed coordination. Salsa gives a physical exercise form that matches your level of skill and fitness.

Salsa dancing has now reached almost every major city, in all countries. Salsa dancing can bring tons of excitement into your relationship, and reawaken a relationship that may have lost its sparks. Salsa dance is characterized by graceful movements, with many two handed turns and arm above the head movements. Salsa can be a deeply improvised dance, taking the form the dancer's desires.

The origin of Salsa is to a large extent Cuban. But, salsa means sauce and the music can be seen as a mixture of ingredients like Latin & Afro-Caribbean dances, rock, pop, jazz and R&B. Salsa's closest links are Cuban mambo and the son orchestras, as well as the Latin jazz. Salsa dance is the most important dance in both Cuba and Puerto Rico and is known in the whole world.

Good concentration on the rhythm and the steps is essential as the steps and moves are changed often and suddenly in salsa. There are several different salsa styles that all have different characteristics. In the Cuban styles the dance in taken place in a circle with the male dancer closer to the center of the circle than the female.

On the counts 1, 2, and 3, the male steps forward, replaces, and steps backward. On the counts 5, 6, and 7, the male steps backwards, replaces, and steps forward again. The female do the opposite. This gives for both of them the steps as left-right-left-pause/tap then right-left-right-pause/tap. The tap could be seen a small step that just help the dancer to follow the rhythm. It is often replaced with a pause.

The cross body styles are danced on a back and forth on a straight line. Salsa is a partner dance, but there are also solo steps. Solo salsa steps are often called shines. Shines are mostly show-offs and involve body movements and fancy footwork. Shines are more common in the cross body styles than in the Cuban style.

One popular form of the Cuban dance is Rueda de Casino that is danced in a group of several couples, with repeated exchanges of dance partners.

When you start to learn salsa it is recommended that you stick to one style of salsa and that you don't mix it with other styles. When you are getting better you can try other styles. The best way to learn salsa is to take salsa lessons regularly. It's often better to take several short classes then to take one weekend course.

You have to keep on practicing. That's very important. If you just want to try salsa you can look on a salsa video on internet. When you get better at salsa you will want to learn as many steps and moves as possible. The best way to learn many more moves is to find salsa videos with new moves on the internet. And remember to keep on practicing.
