Jumping from zero links to 1000 links quickly may alert some search engines that something suspicious may be going on which in turn may cause your website to be flagged. I am still recommending cross-linking using the avenues above, but I am just recommending caution in your strategy to make sure this is at a steady pace, consistent, and long-term.
