Jock itch is also called as tinea cruris. A fungus multiplies and causes jock itch in the groin area. This fungus finds hot and humid places favorable to multiply and therefore rapidly develops in the groin area. You can get it from anybody via contact, shared towels or clothes. The fungus that causes jock itch is from the dermatophyte family.
Those who wear tight under clothing and also sweat a lot are more prone to get jock itch. Obesity also plays a role in making a person prone to jock itch. If you suffer from atopic dermatitis (eczema), you are more prone to get jock itch. If diseases such as AIDS or diabetes compromise your immunity, you may get jock itch sooner than others.
Jock Itch- Treatment
For mild cases of jock itch, you may use anti-fungal creams, powders or ointments. If the problem does not resolve in two weeks, your doctor may prescribe oral anti-fungals. Sometimes, lot of scratching may cause secondary bacterial infections. Your doctor will prescribe you medication for that.
Care-
1. Keep the groin area dry.
2. Don't wear tight fitting or friction causing clothing.
3. Don't share your towel with others.
4. Take regular bath and keep the groin area clean.
5. Don't scratch.
6. Use anti-fungal powder after drying the groin area if you are regularly prone to jock itch.

Jock Itch- symptoms
The first symptom of jock itch is itching in the groin area. The itching is mostly confined to the area near anus, inner thighs and surrounding skin. You may develop red patches with defined darker borders. The patches form scales, are raised and may also ooze. The patches are ring shaped and the color is darker on the edges than on the center.
Your doctor will most probably be able to diagnose jock itch by observing the affected skin. If there is doubt, a biopsy may be done and the fungus will be identified.
Some other diseases that may also cause itching in the groin area are psoriasis, eczema, seborrhoeic dermatitis, candida infections and some other conditions.
