On the highway to town there was a small building near the highway all by itself. To small for much of anything. Someone purchased it and put a sign by the highway- Sno Cones. Now I live where summer temperatures start in April and end in October. About halfway through the first summer another sign was added- ICE CREAM-. The next year some picnic tables were added outside and another sign was added- Bar B Que sandwiches. The sno cone shop was diversifying and creating multiple income streams.
We have all heard of the multiple income streams concept. In the sno cone example above the marketer added more products to produce multiple income sources. In this case the additional products complemented each other and appeals to his first group of customers. When the Ice Cream sign was added, sales of ice cream products started and sales of sno cones increased. When the Bar B Que sandwich sign was added, sales of ice cream and sno cones increased.
The above is an example of adding similar items of similar interest to customers. While this results in multiple income streams, we often think in terms of marketing products of more diverse nature. To continue with this analogy, the sno cone shop owner has spare time in the morning and early after noon. He brings his laptop to his sno cone shop and starts listing items for auction on Ebay. When his food customers find out what he is doing they bring items to auction off on Ebay to him. Although selling ice cream and listing items on Ebay have nothing in common, in his case they tend to feed each other.
Now we need to apply these thoughts and concepts to affiliate marketing on the Internet. We need to have or acquire the equipment to run an internet business. Items such as a computer, scanner, printer and reliable internet service. A cell phone would be good to start with also.
With affiliate marketing it is relatively easy to find many products and/or services to promote. You will probably want to start with one product that you have at least some interest in and become familiar with the product. Select a company to promote that has promotional material available. Look for sample ads. Is there a sales letter available you can use as is or modify? Are there several well written articles you can use in your promotions?
Develop your marketing campaign. The best way to say this is learn how to market one product before promoting another. If your second product is similar( as the sno cone operator did), Then you can blend it in with the first product. In most cases your marketing effort will be similar-you found out how to promote your products with the first product- and should be promoted independently of each other. The exception would be if you are making a special one time offer.
Remember you do not have to continue just promoting similar items. To me it is more psychologically acceptable ,when starting out, stick with similar promotions. This will enable you to become familiar and comfortable with your product promotions.
It is then time to develop other products to promote. Think about a much different product. The reason for this is that if your first group of products become out of favor with the buying public, your second group of products unrelated to the out of favor products will help pay some bills. You will not need to start over completely. Products falling out of favor can happen for a number of reasons from becoming environmentally unfriendly to being left be behind by technology Unless there is an out of the ordinary reason, diversify into another niche area.
Building a business online takes effort, time and some money. Rather than rush through the product selection, spend enough time to understand your market and how to market to them. Time spent to fully understand what your doing to start with will pay off later. The money aspect can be minimized at least until your marketing efforts are to a point that you have some positive cash flow.
Stick to your basic promotions and if discouragement overtakes you, remember it is always to early to quit.
