And it's natural if one thinks there must be another cause for the mess, such as a broken pipe or a faucet left on...until the moment when the Pug is caught in the act!

It's typical, after a lot of screaming and disbelief, for the Pug to be quickly banished out-of-doors. But the truth is that such harsh and fast action can actually have a negative impact on a mature Pug dog. That's because most often it is a medical or psychological cause involved that requires some treatment.

Let's cover the medical reasons first, since this is the most typical cause of the problem in older Pugs. You need to carefully consider and diagnosis the problem here before you start on a treatment and/or retraining program.

Most Pug owners know that the aging process of their Pug will manifest itself in a gradual loss of hearing, followed by diminished vision. Squeezed somewhere in between, signs of arthritis might show up, decreased in appetite, more frequent naps, and other tell-tale signs which may become evident. What is not widely known is that toilet training is one of the first things to go!

Since this is not widely known, it's understandable that Pug owners think that his Pug has forgotten potty training, is not as smart as previously thought, is lazy, or has turned into a sneaky little dog. The truth is that this behavior is more likely the first sign of the inevitable aging process. In fact, as your Pug gets older, the muscles of the bladder gradually lose their control, much like older human experience.

In the male, the aging process can also cause the prostate gland to enlarge, and this will produce an inflammation which will cause him to urinate often. Kidney diseases occurs in about 76% of Pugs over eight years of age. When a Pug ages, there is a gradual degeneration of kidney tissue with a weakening of the kidney function.

To combat these kidney problems, an older Pug should drink at least twice the amount of water than a younger Pug since the older Pug's kidneys will need this to stay healthy. It's no secret that increased water consumption leads to more potty breaks.

Older Pugs therefore need to go outside more often. In many cases, the mature Pug dog will try its best to make his needs known to you. But many times the owner simply isn't aware of their Pug's new requirements and misses the dog's signs. Then, the mature Pug is left with just one option, which is to go inside the house. The Pug is just as upset and embarrassed as the owner in these cases!

When this happens, negative reinforcement will only make the situation worse, especially if the Pug tried to communicate to its owner and these signs were ignored.

Older Dog House Training

A dog house is essentially a small shed which is built into a shape of a little house with a triangular roof. It is the shelter to which the dog runs into for safety from either the natural elements or when he feels he is at risk. Dog houses are made primarily with wood which are treated to keep parasite infestation at bay. And for their comfort, you should choose a suitable one for your dog.

Hundreds of dog houses, all of different designs, prices, material, and sizes, flood the market. It can be extremely confusing in selecting the right house for our dog. Before going on this exciting journey of dog house choosing, customers should always keep in mind their budget, the size of their dog or dogs, and finally, about the type of dog house they really want and which will suit them and their dogs the best. Research shows that among wooden dog houses, cedar houses are usually preferred by all customers. Multitudes of beautifully-designed dog houses exist, which are built with cedar wood.

What size is right for your dog? Use the following guideline to select the right dog house: Roof Height should be 25% to 50% taller than your dog. Door height should be 3/4 the shoulder height of your dog. The overall inside dimensions should not be more than 25% longer than your dog in either direction. If your dog will be outside all year round it is best to use an insulated dog house. You can purchase warming mats to help fight the cold. It is essential to insure that the water supply is clean and that it does not freeze. There are many watering devices available to insure a continuous clean water supply. You will also need a non-freeze water container. These stainless steel water containers assure a fresh water supply even in the coldest weather. Hot weather should also be a concern and there are cooling mats available that you should consider.

House Training Your Dog

Whether you keep your dog indoor or outdoor, you want to know the house training methods that can give you the fastest result. House training a dog can be fun if you know the correct techniques. Below are some basic guides:

1) No matter what happens, don't scold your dog. Shouting at your dog, screaming, smacking or rubbing nose will not help in house training your dog.

2) Schedule Your Dog. Try to keep a daily record of when your dog usually needs to use the bathroom. By knowing the time, you will know when to bring him to the correct place.

3) Reward your dog to reinforce good behavior. It is always a good idea to reward your dog whenever he exhibits good behavior. Rewards can come in various forms from food to verbal praise like "good boy" or "good girl".

4) Be patient, you do not want to waste your effort. It may take a while for you to house train your dog depending on how proficient you are as well as how "coachable" your dog is. Therefore, do not give up easily.
