Phentermine is an appetite suppressant designed to help obese individuals lose weight. It works in combination with exercise, diet modification and behavioural modification and is meant for short-term treatment. The drug first received approval from the American Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in 1959. In the early 70s, Phentermine hydrochloride became available. It was sold by a company called King Pharmaceuticals, under the name Fastin. But in 1998, this particular version of the drug was pulled from the market.

Currently, in the US, Medeva Pharmaceuticals sells Phentermine under the brand name Lonamin and Gate Pharmaceuticals sells it as a drug called Adipex-P, though it is also available in its generic form, simply called ?Phentermine?.

Combining Phentermine with other drugs

But since its original approval in 1959, very few clinical studies have been done on the drug. Most recent studies, conducted in the early 90s, combined Phentermine with Fenfluramine to see if a more efficient appetite suppressant drug could be produced. Fenfluramine had received FDA approval in 1973, also as a treatment for obesity. The new drug became known as Fen-Phen.

While the Fen-Phen combination diet pill was never approved by the FDA, doctors could still prescribe it as an ?off-label? option. Another variation of this drug was created with Dexfenfluramine and Phentermine.

In 1992, a study published by the University of Rochester stated that Fen-Phen was a more effective treatment for chronic obesity than dieting or exercising. It also concluded that this ?diet cocktail? did not evoke any immediate side effects. In 1996, the number of prescriptions for Fen-Phen skyrocketed to over six million in the US.

But in 1997, the Mayo Clinic reported 24 cases of heart valve disease in Fen-Phen users, suggesting a correlation between the two. At the request of the FDA, Fenfluramine and Dexfenfluramine (a similar drug that had been combined with Phentermine) were voluntarily removed from the market by drug manufacturers.

Further studies showed that 30 per cent of Fenfluramine and Dexfenfluramine users had abnormal valve findings. Individuals taking these medications were advised to stop using them.

However, Phentermine, on its own, remained available for the treatment of obesity and is still sold in most countries. There is a risk that users of this medication could become addicted to it since it is similar to amphetamines, and so it is classified as a controlled substance in many countries. Under the Convention on Psychotropic Substances, it is classified as a schedule IV drug.

Phen-Pro: a new combination

There is a new cocktail now on the market called Phen-Pro that combines Phentermine and Prozac, though other antidepressants like Zoloft, Effexor, Luvox, Celexa or Trazadone may also be used in this combination pill instead of Prozac

The purpose of using these antidepressants is to boost the efficacy of Phentermine since its effects tend to decrease over time when it is used alone. In fact, the use of Phen-Pro is unrelated to the treatment of depression. There are no indications that this combination evokes any of the same negative effects as the previous Fen-Phen pill.

Still, Phen-Pro is prescribed as an ?off-label? drug as it has not received official FDA approval due to possible risks associated with all drug mixes. However, since each drug has been separately approved, doctors are allowed to prescribe the ?cocktail?.

Cheap Phentermine, while safe to use, can still cause side effects because it generally increases blood pressure and heart rate. It may cause insomnia, irritability, confusion and dizziness to name a few of the common effects.
