Mud pack is widely used clay therapy due to its several health benefits. The nature cure therapists are adopting mud therapy to body in wounds, boils, bruises and other diseases along with suitable diet and therapies. It is more useful than the cold packs, as it retains the coolness and moisture in the body for long time. Other benefits of mud pack are, it absorb toxins from the body. The mud pack is prepared after obtaining clay from 10 cm below the surface of earth. The clay obtained must not contain harmful materials or chemicals. The clay is made as a smooth paste with warm water, after removing impurities and it is allowed to cool and later it is spread on a cloth piece. The duration is 10 minutes to half an hour.
Clay pack or mud pack is highly beneficial treatment in nervous diseases, weakness, fever, scarlet fever, influenza, measles, swellings, ear and eye troubles, rheumatism, gout, liver and kidney troubles, tooth ache, head ache, and general body aches. It is also useful in abdominal diseases as indigestion and bowel diseases. It promotes labor pains. It is also applied after fomentation to the body for about 15 minutes.
Mud pack reduces the swelling of any part of the body. In case of high fever, the temperature can be brought down with the help of clay pack. It has to be changed frequently till the desired lowering of temperature is effected.

A clay pack is very beneficial in diseases like constipation, gastritis, fever, boils, swelling, intestinal ulcer, etc. Clay of any color can be used, provided it does not contain any harmful materials or chemicals. If the mud is loamy and has a tendency to stick to the skin, some fine sand can be mixed with it.

Method of clay pack ?
1.Take clay from about four inches below the surface of the earth. Ensure that the clay does not contain any impurities, like compost or pebbles. If there are any pebbles, grind the clay and pass it through a sieve.
2.Mix it with cold water and see that it has a consistency like soft dough. It should stick and not be thin enough to slide down when used in the pack.
3.If the pack is to be applied on the abdomen (from the navel to the pubes) spread the mud evenly on a piece of cloth. See that it is about half an inch thick. Then place it gently with the cloth up and the mud touching the skin.
4.Remove the cloth and place a thick woolen piece of cloth on the mud. You may even let the cotton cloth remain over the mud, but cover it with a thick woolen.
5.The mud pack should be used for 20 to 30 minutes. After it is removed, clean the skin using a soft piece of cloth dipped in cold water.
When the patient is covered with woolen cloth, a warming effect is developed. If the aim of the mud bath is to cool the part or reduce the temperature of the body, the clay should be left uncovered. But if a warming effect is desired, it should be covered with woolen cloth.
When clay has been used for its cooling effect, the part to which it has been applied should first be wiped clean with a piece of cloth, and then brought to normal temperature by a dry rubbing with the palms. If it has been used for warming the part, the part should be wiped clean with cloth wrung in cold water.
