As reported in the columns and on the web too, Global IT services and solutions provider, Ness Technologies in the beginning of this year had announced a progressive social responsibility and corporate governance initiative known as ?traffic pointers? in collaboration with the Bangalore traffic police. The company had distributed 1500 safety headgears, the helmets to its employees at its facilities in Bangalore and Mumbai.
President and CEO of Ness Technologies said, ?For a company to create added value, it must always place the primary focus on social values. However, this can only be successful for a long term if a company's social responsibility is implemented as an integral part of its business strategy.?
The traffic safety initiative came in the face of a daunting task, as the traffic police chief said, of reducing the number of accidents in the city of Bangalore. The last years? figures on accidents were around 9 to 10 thousand and accidental deaths were around 800. The police chief commended the collaboration private sector without which ?it's impossible to implement such things?.
The traffic pointers initiative occurs in National Road safety week observed across India from 2nd to 8th Jan. With the launch of Traffic pointers forum, the company aims at roping in leading global corporations, providing them a platform to discuss their views on traffic hazards, generate resources for their employees and facilitate contribution to generic traffic safety measures in conjunction with traffic police and key influencers.
The distribution of helmets was intended to encourage the employees to inculcate road safety norms in their driving habits. A worldwide global road safety programme called MADD (Mothers against drunken driving) motivates young drivers through emotional pressure.
The Bangalore move is hoped to sensitize the community elsewhere. Thus on the latest traffic news about, places like Delhi, being the capital state, Mumbai and Chennai should take the lead as the road fatalities in these cities are much higher.
Road Safety For Children
In the current scenario, envisaging the ever increasing road accidents, driving in India is by far becoming a perilous experience. Statistics indicate that on an average over one lakh people die due to accidents on Indian roads. This is a matter of serious concern for every citizen of this country. In other words, a vigorous effort is required on the part of road users be it a motorist, pedestrian or cyclist as well as the authorities who are responsible for formulating and implementing traffic rules in India.
Studies have revealed that 77% of the road accidents are caused by improper driving. Many factors are responsible for such careless driving like lack of knowledge on the part of driver, attitude, driving skills of the driver. This is a crucial area, which requires imperative measures to bring down the gruesome accidents caused due to negligent driving.
Knowledge of the driver depends on the quality of road safety program imparted to him or her. Though road safety education starts at school level, these days? schools are more worried about results instead of imparting skills to the children for living safely and happily. Contemporary schools must lay more emphasis on teaching children about the road regulations and different modes of transport.
Attitude of a person depends on his upbringing at home and society in general. Most people think of civic value of following traffic rules as someone else's job and their children grow up with same traits which are reflected in their attitude on roads. Thus, one must inculcate proper civic values to their children and make them respect the rights of other road users to ensure their road safety. Such upbringing will definitely reduce phenomenon like drunken driving and road rage which, however, is very common on Indian roads.
Driving skills of the user is another vital factor, novice driving often leads to rashness which in a major contributor to total number of road accidents. Thus, driving training should be made mandatory for everyone, before allotting driving license in India. Proper enforcement of traffic rules could also play a vital role in combating the accident rate. In order to do so, traffic police needs sufficient human resources and equipments like speed cameras, breathalyzers etc.
Thus, changing the traffic situation in India is not a one man's job. It is only when everyone will realize the importance of being disciplined at road that we will be able to see a significant change in road traffic safety in India. In other words, only an honest and sincere collaborative effort can ensure safety of precious lives on Indian roads, which seems to be in great danger as of now.
