Saltwater Fish For Aquariums

    View:
A saltwater fish aquarium in order to be set up correctly should be carefully planned out and the right pieces of equipment have been purchased for it. As you will soon discover there is both a right and wrong way when it comes to setting up a saltwater fish aquarium and knowing the basic procedures for setting one up should help you avoiding doing things wrong. This is why having a plan in place is crucial when you are going to be setting up a saltwater fish aquarium for the first time.

Saltwater Fish Aquarium - What Is The Right One To Choose

The first decision that you will need to make before you can even consider setting up a saltwater fish aquarium, is just which kind it is you want. You have three options available to you, and all of them need to be set up in their own particular way, and each is different from the others. You can choose to have either a Fish Only system, or a Fish Only With Live Rock system, or you may just opt for the Reef Tank system.

The first type of saltwater fish aquarium the Fish Only one is as it name suggests an aquarium that contains tropical fish like Angelfish, Clownfish or Guppy's. There will no types of live rock or coral in the aquarium although you can if you wish install some artificial, synthetic or dried ones along with some shells and other ornaments.

As the name of the Fish Only With Live Rock saltwater fish aquarium name suggests this again contains various different species of tropical fish but also live rocks as well. But it is not one where you will find varieties of coral in it. In this type of aquarium some people like to also keep various mobile and sessile invertebrates and other crustaceans as well as tropical fish. The sessile invertebrates of which barnacles are part of this group enjoy living on live rocks.

The Reef Tank saltwater fish aquarium is not only one of the most beautiful, but is also the most difficult of them all to maintain. This one, along with it possibly having tropical fish in it, will also have live rocks and coral as well. Many of these types of saltwater fish aquariums also contain sessile and mobile invertebrates, and some crustaceans as well. In some cases, people who choose to set up such a saltwater fish aquarium, prefer to not have any tropical fish in theirs.

Things To Do Next When Setting Up A Saltwater Fish Aquarium

After deciding which type of saltwater fish aquarium setup it is you want now you can start thinking about purchasing all the aquarium supplies and equipment. The first thing on your list should be a reasonable sized tank, then you should have on this list lights, a filtration system and filters, a heater and thermometer and marine sand or gravel. Plus you also need to purchase a specialist salt mixture which can change freshwater into saltwater which can then be put into the tank.

Other aquarium supplies which you will need to purchase along with those that we have already mentioned when setting up a saltwater fish aquarium, are a kit for testing the water, a hydrometer, and possibly some supplements or additives to increase calcium and nitrate levels in the water. Plus it is worthwhile in the beginning, to purchase those supplies that will help you to carry out general maintenance of the tank regularly.

Some items which are also worth considering buying when setting up a saltwater fish aquarium but are not essential are a power head and a protein skimmer. The power head is a device that ensures that the water in the tank circulates more fully around it, whilst the protein skimmer works to remove the yellow waste that is produced by tropical fish after they have eaten.
Saltwater Fish For Aquariums
By setting up saltwater fish aquariums correctly, each person will then ensure that the right environment is created for the marine life and saltwater fish to live in, and which will help them to thrive. You need to therefore spend time and purchase all the right kinds of saltwater aquarium supplies first.

Saltwater Fish Aquariums - Steps To Take To Set One Up

It is vital that you actually purchase the right kind of tank which is perfect for setting up saltwater fish aquariums in. Ideally you should select one of those which has been recommended by the staff in the tropical fish store where you make your purchase, and which you can afford. Yet even when you get the tank and other saltwater aquarium supplies home, there are other things to be done before the fish and marine life can be placed in saltwater fish aquariums.

Step 1 - The first thing you need to do before you can even think about filling the tank with water, is clean it out thoroughly once you get it home. This will help to remove any dirt or grease buildup on the tank and which may be harmful to the fish which you put in it. Also washing out saltwater fish aquariums before you use them makes it much easier to set everything up including sticking a background on to it if you have one.

Step 2 - Whilst you leave the tank for your saltwater fish aquarium to dry after it has been washed, you can place the stand on which it will be stood in the chosen location in your home. It is vital that you place it on a surface which is even, and also where it will be close to electrical outlets. Plus you need to make sure that it allows enough space to access it from any side of the tank as well.

Step 3 - Although the tank may now be dried before you place it on the stand, you need to make sure that the padding is in place first. This comes with the stand and helps to keep the base cushioned along with ensuring that saltwater fish aquariums remain level.

Step 4 - The next step to take after placing the aquarium on its stand and making sure that it doesn't move, is to put in the various other pieces of saltwater fish aquarium equipment. One of the first items to go in will be the filtration system, which either hangs on the side of the tank, or which goes underneath the gravel. After this is in place, you can now put in some marine sand or gravel. It is best to lay around two to three inches in the base of the tank, and also build up an area of gravel or marine sand at the back to form a bank.

Step 5 - Now that you have the gravel and filtration system in place, you can begin to add water to it. You can either leave freshwater to stand for several days before putting it into the aquarium, or if you want to do this stage in just one day, then you need to add a special saltwater mixture to it before you put the freshwater in the tank. However, what you should not be doing at this time is thinking about putting any fish, marine life or plants into your saltwater fish aquarium.

Saltwater Fish Aquariums - The Waters In, What Do You Do Next?

After filling the saltwater fish aquarium with the right volume of water, now one can install the heating pump system. Then you should turn on the heater and the filtration system and let them run in the aquarium for the next 24 hours, so you will then be able to see whether they are working properly or not. Also it is a good idea to keep an eye on the temperature of the water to make sure that it reaches a level that the tropical fish, corals, plants and other marine life will find comfortable.

Although you may have installed a protein skimmer during the first 24 hours, you will not be able to easily detect whether it is functioning properly. The only thing that will tell you that it is working, is that it produces bubbles.

Before you actually go out and purchase any fish, corals and plants to put into saltwater fish aquariums, it is a good idea to test the levels of salt, protein and pH in the water first. There are kits which are readily available for you to use at home and which can be purchased through any good salt water fish aquarium supply company that is close to where you live, or by going online.

If you want to ensure that the fish, plants and corals you put into saltwater fish aquariums thrive, then it is important for you to remember to set up the aquarium correctly in the first place. If not then you may find yourself spending even more money because you need to replace some or all of the aquatic life in the aquarium, because they couldn't cope with their new environment.
