One treatment for sleep apnea, a sleep disorder with frequent pauses in breathing during sleep, is the CPAP or continuous positive airway pressure. CPAP machines push a controlled stream of air from a medical pump through a flexible tube into the patient's mouth via a sleep apnea mask, which allows air to gently blow into the back of the throat, keeping the airway open.
The sleep apnea mask must both make a seal and be comfortable to wear. If the sleep apnea mask is too big, the straps may need to be overly tight, causing skin irritations or sores. If the sleep apnea mask is too small, it will not seal properly, allowing air to leak out through the edges. To help achieve a proper fit the sleep apnea mask comes in three different types:
1. Nasal Mask: This mask covers only the nose and is the most common CPAP sleep apnea mask.
2. Full Facemask: This sleep apnea mask covers both the nose and the mouth. This type of mask helps when leaks are experienced using the nasal mask.
3. Nasal Pillows: This system uses soft silicone tubes that fit directly into the nostrils. It can also help eliminate air leaks found when using other sleep apnea masks, and may provide a greater sense of freedom.
Most sleep apnea masks are triangular, with adjustable straps that wrap around the head to keep the sleep apnea mask in place. Headgear straps must be snug enough for a good fit in all sleeping positions (back, side and front). Either ?quick-release? clips attach to the straps at the front of the sleep apnea mask, or the strap hooks to one part of the mask. Both allow for easy removal, and for one-time adjustment of the straps.
Sleep apnea masks consist of a hard plastic body and a softer silicone seal. The seal may inflate once the machine starts, so the straps do not have to be as tight. Some sleep apnea masks do not cover the nose's bridge, so glasses can be worn. Some sleep apnea masks have a foam-like material inside the silicone that ?memorizes? the facial contours. Mouth breathers can use a specially designed sleep apnea mask, or add a chinstrap to help keep the mouth closed. One type of sleep apnea mask includes sound-absorbing material in a piece of plastic over its exhalation port, muffling and dissipating sound and exhalation flow that may bother a bed-partner. Still other sleep apnea masks have two tube openings, allowing oxygen to be administered along with pressurized air.
For those allergic to silicone, several sleep apnea masks are made of synthetic rubber or vinyl. Additionally, some sleep apnea masks contain a gel-like material, which more easily molds to the face, alleviating pressure points.
The health care provider will work to insure the sleep apnea mask is a proper fit. Often, a trial period is required to determine which sleep apnea mask fits the best, is the most comfortable and is the most effective.

Common Issues
Sleep apnea masks are not very comfortable to wear to bed. Most of us can probably imagine how uncomfortable it would be to go through the entire night with a cold foreign object strapped to the face and attached to a six feet hose that could tangle all over. Aside from the hose tangling discomfort a sleep apnea mask may also cause facial irritation and strap marks. Your mask may also restrict your movement and may even loosen a bit causing air leaks.
Fit is Important
One important point to consider when choosing a sleep apnea mask is its fit. The fit will depend on both your facial features and preferences. There are three major kinds of sleep apnea masks. You can pick a nasal mask which will only cover your nose, an oronasal mask which will cover both your nose and mouth and an oral mask which will push air only through your mouth.
To prevent air leaks, make sure that the mask fits snugly over the contours and lines of your face such as the nose bridge. Make sure too that the straps can be put on securely.
Buying Online
Most people would want to purchase a sleep apnea mask and machine online for security and privacy reasons. Buying online however may result in having a mask that will not fit you properly. An incorrect mask will most certainly result in even worse sleeplessness due to discomfort or air leaks.
Make sure you have the correct specifications when choosing a mask online. Ask your doctor for some advice or go scout around in shops and look at different models. Jot down your specifications and check if an online mask will fit your needs.
Special Features
Look for trusted online sites that has a wide variety of sizes, designs and mask specifications for you to choose from. Some sites may offer personally molded masks that can be molded to the shape of both the nose and the nostrils. A personally molded mask will also allow you to fit the mask according to your mouth and cheek shapes and features.
There are also sleep apnea mask that has added features for comfort. Masks with padded straps and headgear will limit the discomfort and the marks that straps may leave on your face. There are now straps that will also provide a user with a 360 degree freedom of movement. Detachable parts also come in handy for easy storage and cleaning.
Check for Compatibility
Since there are different machine manufacturers, it follows that there are different kinds of machines that may not necessarily be compatible with every single kind of mask. You can easily check for compatibility if you are buying in a store. If you want to buy your mask online, make sure to check for compatibility. Manufacturers will almost always make masks that are compatible only with the kind of machine that they are selling.
